As a Survivor...
Revisado: 11-23-21
I was born into the Institute of Basic Life Principles cult, or the Duggar cult, as it's often known. I got out when my parents divorced. Thankfully I was placed with my neglectful parent, not the abusive one, but I had to dig my way out from the cult mentality at the tender age of 13. I still suffer from PTSD from that time and upbringing, which wasn't helped by a career in the military. Listening to Sarah and Anthony and this podcast, after watching The Vow, Seduced, and even reading the trial transcripts of Keith Raniere has greatly helpes my recovery, and I fully admire what they do. This series is engaging, funny, informative, and unlike a lot of other cult shows, it talks about how to protect yourself and heal yourself from cultic abuse, instead of just describing the experience of being in a cult. Thank you, guys. Your work and efforts are greatly appreciated.

Historia
At the age of five, Megan Phelps-Roper began protesting homosexuality and other alleged vices alongside fellow members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. Founded by her grandfather and consisting almost entirely of her extended family, the tiny group would gain worldwide notoriety for its pickets at military funerals and celebrations of death and tragedy.

Captivating
Revisado: 08-11-21
There are few things harder to explain than Christian fundamentalism. The author does so perfectly. As a fellow woman raised inside a Christian cult, I listened to Ms. Phelps-Roper's story with rapt attention, and saw so many of my experiences in hers. How it's almost impossible to realize that there's another way to live, because you were raised in the cult. How you can become so prideful without realizing it, because you get set up in an echo chamber of your faith your way, and everybody else is wrong. My moment of questioning began when I realized that I was gay. I knew that my entire family would close all their doors to me and excommunicate me without a second thought. I would lose everything. Long story short, I *did* lose my home and family and friends. But from that loss I gained everything good that I have and, like Ms Phelps-Roper, I attempt to use my history and my story to help others feel less alone in this brutal yet beautiful world.
Ms. Phelps-Roper, if you see this, I'd like to say thank you for telling your story. Thank you for showing that there's a better way to live. I pray that some day your family will see the light and realize that the God of the Bible did change. That he became a loving god instead of a vengeful god. I hope they see your love for them, and that they come to you in humility and ask for your forgiveness. I hope that the entirety of the Westboro Baptist Church finds their conscience pricked, and that they examine their lives and dogma closely, and realize the goodness of the world that surrounds them. Thank you for what you do to this day, speaking openly and supporting debate, and encouraging us all to engage in respectful disagreement, and reminding us all that we do, always, have something to learn from those who think and believe differently from us. Blessings to you, Grace, Chad, and Solvi.
