Historia
New York, 1960: For Benny Lament, music is his entire life. With his father’s deep ties to the mob, the Bronx piano man has learned that love and family can get you in trouble. So he keeps to himself, writing songs for other musicians, avoiding the spotlight…until the night his father brings him to see Esther Mine sing. Esther is a petite powerhouse with a gorgeous voice. And when Benny writes a hit song and performs it with her, their collaboration thrusts the duo onto the national stage…and stirs up old issues and new scrutiny that the mob--and Benny--would rather avoid.

An Outstanding Author and a Brilliant Narrator
Revisado: 03-30-21
I loved this book. Amy brings us into the change that is the 1960s through the eyes of a man who’s significance is more than just his songs. Everything in his life highlights America’s struggles in a crucial decade. The story telling is riveting. But the core is Benny and Esther. The story of their relationship is everything. And Rob Shapiro brings the book to life beautifully. I first heard Rob when he read Amy’s book Making Faces and I’ve been hoping he’d read another of her books. I’m so happy he read this one.

Coping with Love and Humor
Revisado: 10-14-20
When Jill Bengtsson announced that she planned to write a series of vignettes about the McKallister family from her best-selling Cake series, her Banana Binder fan group was ecstatic. Who better to get readers through the vicissitudes of the pandemic than Jake and Casey, Kyle and Kenzie, Emma and Finn, and the rest of the family and in-laws.
Optimism was rewarded and expectations were exceeded. The stories were funny and touching updates, connecting with our greatest fears while we identify with toilet paper crises and quarantines. The epilogue is everything.
Now we have the additional joy of hearing them as well. Connor Crais and Stella Hunter, combined with Jill’s vivid writing, bring an experience that will have the listener rolling in laughter and empathetically tearing up, sometimes both at the same time.
Even if you are new to Jill’s books, this would be a terrific introduction to the Cake series. Especially the bonus material at the end.
So hunker down with the McKallister family. You won’t regret it.

Redemption Worth Redeeming
Revisado: 08-06-18
Redemption is not my usual read. It takes place on a ranch. The male protagonist just got out of the military. Neither are tropes I usually seek out. And yet, I enjoyed the story. The building relationship was well done as were the supporting characters. The setting seemed realistic. And the ending was nicely done. I liked tha narrator. He made the third-person omniscient voice different from the characters, which is not always easy. So, I would say if you like romances that are a little complicated but not overly angsty, this might be a good listen for you.
