Historia
Like the alphabet, the calendar, or the zodiac, the periodic table of the chemical elements has a permanent place in our imagination. But aside from the handful of common ones (iron, carbon, copper, gold), the elements themselves remain wrapped in mystery. We do not know what most of them look like, how they exist in nature, how they got their names, or of what use they are to us.

Great book, annoying narrator
Revisado: 08-19-23
No one who cannot correctly pronounce ‘nuclear’ should be allowed to narrate a book containing it. Completely maddening.

Historia
Amazons - fierce warrior women dwelling on the fringes of the known world - were the mythic archenemies of the ancient Greeks. Heracles and Achilles displayed their valor in duels with Amazon queens, and the Athenians reveled in their victory over a powerful Amazon army. In historical times, Cyrus of Persia, Alexander the Great, and the Roman general Pompey tangled with Amazons.

Great content, terrible narration
Revisado: 05-22-21
This is a well written and insightful book. Reading it will be a learning experience for anyone. It is, unfortunately, cursed with a narrator who made no effort at all to learn the correct pronunciation of many, many words. I recommend reading in on paper or in Kindle, but NOT in the audiobook.

Historia
Somewhere under the freezing Atlantic, a Soviet sub commander has just made a fateful decision. The Red October is heading west. The Americans want her. The Russians want her back. The chase for the highly advanced nuclear submarine is on—and there’s only one man who can find her. Brilliant CIA analyst Jack Ryan has little interest in fieldwork, but when covert photographs of Red October land on his desk, Ryan soon finds himself in the middle of a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek played by two world powers—a game that could end in all-out war.

Narrator Kills Great Story
Revisado: 10-23-19
Love the book, but the narrator is excruciatingly horrible. Bad character voices, bad accents, just bad.

A Hard Review to Write
- De Ark1836 en 11-20-15
Disappointing
Revisado: 08-02-17
Would you try another book from The Great Courses and/or Professor Daniel N. Robinson?
The Great Courses, yes. Robinson, no.
What could The Great Courses have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The Great Courses should have reviewed the content of this book for accuracy and bias.
Would you be willing to try another one of Professor Daniel N. Robinson’s performances?
No.
What character would you cut from The Great Ideas of Philosophy, 2nd Edition?
Professor Robinson
Any additional comments?
This is a course on the great ideas of philosophy only if "great" is defined to mean ideas of which Professor Robinson approves and which fit his narrow, Christianity-centered perspective. There were no great philosophers in the Renaissance? Really? Machiavelli, anyone? Professor Robinson's inclusion of witchcraft in this course was baffling, especially as his perspective appears to be that witches had actual magical powers. At no point does he suggest that persecuting witches was pointless because, hey, not possible to kill the neighbor's cows with the power of one's mind. Then we have the Inquisition presented as an advance in human rights. This is so ridiculous as to require no further comment. The list of the problems with this course is much too long for this review. Don't buy it.

Enlightening and Entertaining

Where does Heaven in a Wild Flower rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I enjoyed this book very much. Potkay skillfully balances poetic analysis with the fascinating lives of these seven poets. His narrative held my attention from beginning to end and refreshed my memory of and fondness for the Romantic poets.
What other book might you compare Heaven in a Wild Flower to and why?
I've enjoyed most of the Modern Scholar audio books, but Professor Potkay does a particularly nice job. This series is excellent; the topics are interesting and well-presented. The narratives are accessible to the general reader without ever being condescending.
Any additional comments?
I highly recommend this book. Don't be intimidated; extensive prior knowledge of the Romantics is unnecessary to understand and enjoy it. Even if you aren't sure you love Romantic poetry, you'll still love this book.
