Historia
They call them wayward girls. Loose girls. Girls who grew up too fast. And they’re sent to Wellwood House in St. Augustine, Florida, where unwed mothers are hidden by their families to have their babies in secret, to give them up for adoption, and most important of all, to forget any of it ever happened. Everything the girls eat, every moment of their waking day, and everything they’re allowed to talk about is strictly controlled by adults who claim they know what’s best for them.

Tedious
Revisado: 03-03-25
I found this novel to be a disappointing effort from author Grady Hendrix. Previous novels like The Final Girl Support Group had an underlying sense of fun. Witchcraft for Wayward Girls, on the other hand, is unrelentingly bleak. What little dramatic action occurs unfolds at a snail’s pace. I suppose the author meant this novel to be an exercise in psychological terror, but I found it more an exercise in psychological tedium. The final chapter is an epilogue that partially rescues the novel, but it takes far too long to reach that point. if you are particularly interested in teen pregnancy, or if you feel you have to have every novel written by Grady Hendrix, then by all means buy and listen to this audiobook. If you are just looking for a fun listen, look elsewhere.

Uneven
Revisado: 11-08-24
There are some interesting stories here, especially the first and last ones. Sadly, the collection is uneven, and some of the stories are hard to follow or not particularly satisfying. A bigger problem, perhaps, is the narration. While some stories are read well there are stories that are set in places like Wales or Australia that would be far easier to like if the performance was read in an appropriate accent. Worth a listen, but uneven.

The worst audiobook ever
Revisado: 08-20-24
This recording is, assuredly and without a doubt, the worst audiobook I have ever listened to. There are no likable characters. It insults the mentally ill. The prose is tepid and at times illogical. The police procedures are faulty and make no sense. For no reason, near the end of the novel the author takes our thoroughly ordinary police detective and suddenly has him musing on Albert Camus. The dialog is jarringly bad. Half of the time the narrator reads in lethargic, sleepy voice as if even he was bored with this tripe. Don’t waste your time.

Historia
Porter Beck is the sheriff in the high desert of Nevada, north of Las Vegas. Born and raised there, he left to join the Army, where he worked in Intelligence, deep in the shadows in far off places. Now he's back home, doing the same lawman's job his father once did, before his father started to develop dementia. All is relatively quiet in this corner of the world, until on old, retired FBI agent is found killed. He was brutally tortured before he was killed and clues at the scene point to a mystery dating back to the early days of the nuclear age.

Stinky, but in a fun way
Revisado: 12-20-23
This novel stinks, but in cheesy pulp paperback sort of way. If it were a movie it would be fine fodder for the folks at MST3k or Rifftrax. The prose is pedestrian and the characters thinner than a page from a drugstore paperback. I can mostly forgive the ludicrous plot twists, and the author seems to capture rural Nevada well enough, but the whole thing has a melodramatic quality that reeks. The narration is good enough, but nothing special. Okay for light entertainment, but nothing more.

A great Halloween listen
Revisado: 11-07-23
I really enjoyed this anthology of Halloween themed stories. The narration is, for the most part, top notch. Most of the stories are suitably chilling without gratuitous gore, this is a well produced audio book that I highly recommend.

It’s the mid-'90s. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online. And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life.

Creepy and crafted, and menacingly narrated, with shades of Steven King, H P. Lovecraft, and Dean Koontz, this was a perfect Halloween season listen.

Satisying
Revisado: 08-19-22
Notches is easily the most satisfying of the first four novels in the Montana Mystery series. It had a solid plot with more focus on action forward movement than previous novels. The Audible performance is strong, with no doubt as to which character is speaking. In spite of the serious storyline there is still humor, warmth, a bit of mysticism, and enjoyable characters. Highly recommend.

Gross but not scary
Revisado: 07-19-22
The Bird Eater is perhaps the worst audio book I have ever listened to.. The plot has little action and less interest. At one point there is conversation that lasts nearly 30 minutes to provide perhaps 2 minutes of back story. The author confuses gore with terror, angst with suspense, and self pity with character development. The story as told is repulsive, but not frightening. The narration is presented in a cadence reminiscent of Peter Lorre that is initially intriguing, but that quickly becomes annoying. To paraphrase Kurt Vonnegut, take pity on the listener!

Historia
It's 1998, and for years the old First Bank of Cleveland has sat abandoned, perfectly preserved, its secrets only speculated on by the outside world. Twenty years before, amid strange staff disappearances and allegations of fraud, panicked investors sold Cleveland's largest bank in the middle of the night, locking out customers and employees and thwarting a looming federal investigation. In the confusion that followed, the keys to the vault's safe-deposit boxes were lost.

Dreary
Revisado: 02-03-22
This novel has it all - a tedious interwoven plot so dreary as to be worthy of Dostoyevsky, whining female characters lacking agency, and resolution without redemption. If that is what you want, read this novel. If you prefer characters who make sensible choices and exert some power over their circumstances avoid this thing like the plague.
