I chanced upon this book by luck and immediately got it, mainly because I’m a huge fan of Mat Baynton. After years of Audible, this was the best thing I have listened to so far. The story is fascinating and completely engrossing (definitely disturbing). Mat Baynton’s voice and narration are beyond perfect. I emphatically hope he chooses to narrate some more “grown-up” stories in the future. Likewise, I hope that Leo Benedictus decides to author another novel. He clearly has a gift.

Neil Gaiman Has a Terrible Voice

This is the first time I've returned a title. I got through part 1 and found I just couldn't take the sound of Neil Gaiman's voice anymore. I get it, he's the author, that makes him cool, But that doesn't mean I want to listen to him. I found myself wantitng to skip over everything until I could just hear James McAvoy again. Other than that, it's a really impressive production and I probably would have enjoyed it had it not been for that one problem. Shame.

Even Julian Rhind-Tutt Can't Save It

Up until now I was pretty sure I would be happy listening to Julian Rhind-Tutt read the back of a cereal box, but this book seems to have proven me wrong. I'm half way through and I just don't have the will to finish it. Even with the overdone and repetitive quotes from The Smiths, I still can't make myself like this. It's a boring tale that just drags on and on and goes nowhere.

Too Many Holes, Not Believable.

I wanted to love this. I vaguely remembered seeing the movie years ago and thinking it was an awesome idea for a ghost story, but that it just had too many holes. I was hoping the book would fill some of those in. Turns out, the book has more holes than the movie. I love ghost stories and have no problem with suspension of disbelief, but the author just didn't make this believable for me. The end explanation of the "why" was pitiful, and any explanation of the "how" was just non-existent.
(*SPOILER* Someone please explain to me how she drove the car to town... repeatedly.)
Narrator was great though. No complaints there.

Decent Story, But Too Long. Dull Narrator.

This story could have been so much better if the author had just focused on the base ghost story (which was good) and left out the entire wedding subplot and lesbian love story. It was just too long. I appreciate the author's gift for description but it really became tedious and repetitive after a point. Also, I really did not care for the narrator at all. There are 4 narrators listed in the description which I don't understand because clearly I was listening to the same breathy, monotonous voice the entire 12+ hours. It was difficult to tell which character I was supposed to be hearing because there was so little variation in the voice. I found myself glad when it was over so that I could finally move on to something else.

An engrossing story and an absolutely amazing narrator. I thouroughly enjoy listening to anything Julian Rhind-Tutt narrates, and I will be reading more from Craig Russell in the future. If you like mystery, horror and history, you should check this out. I loved it.
