Historia
A man wakes up in an unknown landscape, injured and alone. He used to live in a place called California, but how did he wind up here with a head wound and a bottle of pills in his pocket? He navigates his surroundings, one rough shape at a time. Here lies a pipe, there a reed that could be carved into a weapon, beyond a city he once lived in. He could swear his daughter’s name began with a J, but what was it, exactly? Then he encounters an old man, a crow, and a boy—and realizes that nothing is what he thought it was, neither the present nor the past.

A Person Lead a Boring Depressing Life
Revisado: 06-17-22
I came into this story with high hopes given the reviews comparing it to Project Hail Mary. While the setup is similar, guy with amnesia going on a journey to a strange new world haunted by flashbacks, PHM featured a protagonist with an interesting back story and a sense of humor exploring a strange and exciting world with real stakes.
This is 11 hours of someone naval gazing his way through a dull landscape with features as boring as he is. The flashbacks reveal an equally dull life so unimaginative I had fast forward at times just to get away from it.
I kept hoping for something exciting at the end, some big reveal that would make the endless monotony worth it, sadly the big twist proved to be just as dull and unimaginative as the rest of the story. I will at least say the narration was excellent.

A Decent Chapter in the Series
Revisado: 09-26-21
This was a good collection Fred gets a number of opportunities to learn more about the parahuman community and forge new ties and allies, but ultimately very little changes,
Fred's sire makes an interesting appearance, but his defeat is a little too fast and easy. For a moment it actually seemed like someone in Fred's life would genuinely suffer for having let Fred in, but ultimately everyone comes out suffering no real permanent damage.
The characters are their usual fun selves, but honestly this was all a little too predictable for me.

Another Success
Revisado: 03-15-20
As always, Barry Eisler provides an excellent story and a great narration. The chapters are well paced and the storyline is extremely compelling. I particularly enjoyed the switch off of perspective between the people investigating and the perpetrators. Seeing the way different types of work (from intelligence to law enforcement) bring different mindsets to an investigation was very interesting, as was the way in which characters were able to work outside their comfort zone after seeing their preconceptions were impeding their work.

Historia
The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled.

Excellent Story
Revisado: 12-01-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, the story was clear, well paced and engaging.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes, mainly by making a character whose life was both extraordinary and believable. Barry Eisler excels at well written, developed characters, and a fast moving plot.
What does Barry Eisler bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
A voice that beautifully conveys the main characters emotions at key events.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I found myself horrified by the injustice of the world we live in as personalized by the main character.
