Unlikable Kids Goes on Boring Adventure
Revisado: 10-29-17
I've worked my way through the whole Ender's series and this is a rare miss. I've never had so much disdain and apathy for a protagonist. Hopefully this is just a stumble and we'll be back on track for the next book, otherwise, it's been a fun journey but time to move on.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I doubt most authors like to be compared to other writers, but I think in this case it's a genuine compliment. Fast-paced, witty, and doesn't take itself too seriously. A fun read...err...listen.

Historia
Martin and his friends discovered that their world is computer generated and that by altering the code they could alter reality. They traveled back in time to Medieval England to live as wizards. Almost everything they've done since then has, in one way or another, blown up in their faces. So of course they decide to make dragons. It does not go well.

Solid Addition to a Great Series

Classic Meyers. Witty, light and enjoyable. I don't think the plot was as clever as An Unwelcome Quest, and it did drag a bit in the middle, that being said, if you like this series this is a solid recommend.

Historia
The American public's introduction to nuclear technology was manifested in destruction and death. With Hiroshima and the Cold War still ringing in our ears, our perception of all things nuclear is seen through the lens of weapons development. Nuclear power is full of mind-bending theories, deep secrets, and the misdirection of public consciousness - some deliberate, some accidental. The result of this fixation on bombs and fallout is that the development of a non-polluting, renewable energy source stands frozen in time.

Loved it. Five stars, all that. Thorough history of nuclear radiation and nukes. Can be a bit "text-booky" at times, but overall it's a great read on the subject. My biggest gripe is that the narrator sounds like he is reading a movie-trailer, but this is a minor annoyance. I highly recommend it anyone who wants to learn more about the subject. I would also recommend Command and Control: Nuclear Weapons, the Damascus Accident, and the Illusion of Safety, by Eric Schlosser. It read more like a novel and is also full of great info.

Great Book.....But..... *MINOR SPOILERS*

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I understand that this book wasn't meant to be perfectly accurate, but the question I want answered is how a meteorite so dense that it pokes a hole in the earth and causes volcanoes to erupt didn't slowly sink to the middle of the earth's core? It is by far the densest material on earth, it should have never surfaced.

Historia
Five years ago, the mysterious and inscrutable head of Effective Engineering Solutions, Eli Glinn, led a mission to recover a gigantic meteorite - the largest ever discovered - from a remote island off the coast of South America. The mission ended in disaster when their ship, the Rolvaag, foundered in a vicious storm in the Antarctic waters and broke apart, sinking - along with its unique cargo - to the ocean floor. One hundred and eight crew members perished, and Eli Glinn was left paralyzed.

Not very compelling and a narrator change
Revisado: 05-26-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Wasn't nearly as good as The Ice Limit as I just felt that the writing wasn't up to par. Less compelling characters and a so so story. I re-listened to The Ice Limit prior to this book and it was a bit jarring to have a change in narrator. It didn't help with the continuity.

Historia
Humans expanded into space...only to find a universe populated with multiple alien species bent on their destruction. Thus was the Colonial Union formed, to help protect us from a hostile universe. The Colonial Union used the Earth and its excess population for colonists and soldiers. It was a good arrangement...for the Colonial Union. Then the Earth said: no more.

Scalzi is a great author, and Old Man's War (book 1) is one of my favorites. For me though, a novel in this series without John Perry's sardonic whit (and Dufris narrating the whole thing) just falls flat.

Historia
Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

The Last Starfighter (reimagined)
Revisado: 07-16-15
Any additional comments?
As with Scalzi and Old Man's War, Cline set an almost impossible bar to leap with Ready Player One. Armada is a good book, but it's not a great book. It's not nearly as imaginative as RP1, but it's well written with a nice fast pace, and if you are a fan of Cline (and I am a HUGE fan of Cline), you'll like the book. I wish he'd left the 80's nostalgia to the RP1 series and set out on a different path for this one. That being said, this isn't a negative review, I just think I had my hopes WAY too high.

Historia
From the author of The Power of One comes a new novel about Africa. The time is 1939. White South Africa is a deeply divided nation with many of the Afrikaner people fanatically opposed to the English. The world is also on the brink of war, and South Africa elects to fight for the Allied cause against Germany. Six-year-old Tom Fitzsaxby finds himself in The Boys Farm, an orphanage in a remote town in the high mountains, where the Afrikaners side fiercely with Hitler's Germany.

Sister Novel To "The Power Of One"
Revisado: 04-24-15
Any additional comments?
I feel like this is the book that Courtenay would have like to have written when he completed The Power Of One. It's a more polished story from a more experienced author, but with a little less heart. It's a good read and I definitely recommend it, but you will see a lot of parallels to The Power Of One...too many for my taste.

Where does The Circle rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It's a good book. Fun to listen to and paced well....but....I expected more from Eggers. Many people have made the 1984 comparison. I would consider it a modern retelling of 1984 with a lot of Daniel Suarez mixed in. My biggest problem is that the protagonist, a well educated and intelligent woman, essentially just blindly accepts what is little more than a paper thin argument for ' total transparency.' And for that matter, so does just about everyone in the book. Ironically, the plot of the book is just as transparent as what The Circle calls for. There were no real surprises and you can pretty much see each plot point telegraphed about a mile out. Don't think I'm panning this book. Eggers is a great author and "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" still pretty much tops my list of all time great books. I just would have really liked have seen more depth.
