Historia
Mary is a treacherous experiment. Her creator, an immortal named Doro, has molded the human race for generations, seeking out those with unusual talents like telepathy and breeding them into a new subrace of humans who obey his every command. The result is Mary: a young black woman living on the rough outskirts of Los Angeles in the 1970s, who has no idea how much power she will soon wield.

Amazing concept and characters
Revisado: 03-31-25
If you read Wildseed and liked it, you will love this. If you read Wildseed and you didn’t like it then this book is ALSO for you. The concepts of connection, severance, race, gender, eugenics, state control feature heavily in this psychological tale of a woman who is bred to do one thing, but takes an unexpected path that draws her into conflict with her creator and tasked with forging a new society. The characters are stunningly complex, the pacing and length are perfect. The world is mostly the world you know and this is what makes it easy to explore the complexities of the books key concepts. It’s beautifully performed by Robin Miles. Her voice work is excellent and makes the story even more immersive than it would be in print.

Months later, the world is as confused as ever. Just a really good time
Revisado: 12-09-24
This is a super engaging and thoughtful novel. It hooked me early and made me think a lot about the nature of technology, companies, and human tendencies. I would totally recommend this book.

Historia
Everyone needs to love and be loved - even men. But to know love, men must be able to look at the ways that patriarchal culture keeps them from knowing themselves, from being in touch with their feelings, from loving. In The Will to Change, bell hooks gets to the heart of the matter and shows men how to express the emotions that are a fundamental part of who they are - whatever their age, marital status, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

Revisado: 06-18-24
As a scholar of feminism with a long-held interest in issues of masculinity, I expected to find this book routine. But one should never underestimate bell hooks. This book was transformative and beautiful and an absolute gem.

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Historia
Stories of Your Life and Others presents characters who must confront sudden change-the inevitable rise of automatons or the appearance of aliens-while striving to maintain some sense of normalcy. In the amazing and much-lauded title story (the basis for the 2016 movie Arrival), a grieving mother copes with divorce and the death of her daughter by drawing on her knowledge of alien languages and non-linear memory recollection.

Revisado: 08-22-23
I rated this book really highly because all of the stories were interesting, and each of them poses key philosophical and scientific questions. If you’re looking to expand your mind, you’re in the right place.

Historia
Crazy Horse was the legendary military leader of the Oglala Sioux whose personal power and social nonconformity contributed to his reputation as being “strange.” Crazy Horse fought in many battles, including the famous Battle of the Little Bighorn, and held out tirelessly against the US government’s efforts to confine the Native Americans to reservations. Eventually, in the spring of 1877, he surrendered to military forces and ended up meeting a violent death. Now, nearly a century and a half later, Crazy Horse continues to hold a special place in the hearts and minds of people.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

It’s a cute and easy read. It’s not the most original story. I like that there is one narrator for the octopus and another for the humans.

Historia
The Racial Contract puts classic Western social contract theory to extraordinary radical use. With a sweeping look at the European expansionism and racism of the last 500 years, Charles W. Mills demonstrates how this peculiar and unacknowledged "contract" has shaped a system of global European domination: how it brings into existence "whites" and "non-whites," full persons and sub-persons, how it influences white moral theory and moral psychology; and how this system is imposed.

An incredible book
Revisado: 05-30-17
This book points to fundamental issues in philosophy that explain the ways in which mainstream political theory operates to make invisible the racial structuring of our society. It is a book that every white person and surely every white philosopher should read.
