The characters had a mostly healthy relationship, which is more than I can say about most romances I’ve read lately, but the plot way too contrived to be interesting.

Imagine two people who spend forty years being so immature they cut off their relationships with other people rather than communicate? And then they write and bind full length books to prove how right they are for doing so.

The melodrama would be bad enough, but Ashlyn comes along and runs into absolutely no obstacles trying to figure out the “mystery” which clearly isn’t much of a mystery, since everyone conveniently happens to call with the information just as she needs it.

And I can’t help but think of Dara Horn’s People Love Dead Jews while reading this, seeing as the primary Jewish character dies before the story begins. And though one of the other characters converts to Judaism, there’s nothing particularly Jewish about her except that she celebrates Chanukah in the final scene.

I feel like no one told Liane Moriarty “show, don’t tell.” Everything in this book felt like telling, and I only cared about the characters because of shock value (oh no! Will her husband really kill her?) and did she really need to tell us things like who Jiminy Cricket is or how YouTube works? It just felt like it added unnecessarily to an already long book—the first quarter of that book is on the flight, which is longer than the flight itself! I actually enjoyed the last 2 hours of the book, but I didn’t want to sit through the first 18 to get there.

I fell in love with Isabel Cañas after reading The Hacienda, and this lived up to its predecessor. Very different in feel than the other, but just as well written. I love unique take on vampires just as much as the way Cañas plays with familiar genres by setting her stories in historical Mexico. As with The Hacienda, the narrators are excellent and their fluid switches between Spanish and English words helps sets the scene auditoríally.

The protagonist was so dull I can’t remember her name, which might be why the narrator sounded so wooden reading her. There are so many details, like the opening car accident, that have no bearing whatsoever on the story. And the opening “meet cute” was so unbelievable I know people who forgot it happened! Again, no bearing on the story. The most interesting part was an implication in the first chapter that the protagonist was or had previously had a morphine addiction, which also had no bearing on the story. I honestly think Colleen Hoover didn’t know where she was going with the book as she wrote it. Definitely will *not* be reading other books by this author.

Vance’s narration is excellent, as usual, and Shrum does an excellent job paying homage to the original text. But the story centers around a romance plot between James and Tiger Lily, which I just didn’t find all that interesting. Overall, it’s a solid meh.

This book was beautiful, and I only wish I had read it earlier in my life. It is poignant and bittersweet with thought-provoking comments about the way intelligence leads us to isolate ourselves from and fear others. The narrator was great, with a fantastic ability to voice both Charlies in their own unique voices, still giving them all the depth they deserve.

I read this because I read The Crown’s Game, which I felt a standard fantasy novel. I liked this one more, likely because of the high stakes the author is willing to write and the deep connection to Russian History. With The Crown’s Fate, Skye proved she wasn’t writing just any other fantasy story.

Another great Gustafer Yellowgold story. I enjoyed listening to this one and Taylor delivers on both quirky characters and fun songs. I think I liked book 1 more, but that’s me.

I have seen reviews that critics hygienic adaptation for being too adult, but if anything, it is less adult than original novel. This rendition is beautifully faithful that text, down to small details such as Hook’s blood, or that Peter once lived among the birds (from Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens). I did appreciate the change from the “redskins” in the 1904 book to Tiger Lily’s Lost Girls, but I didn’t understand the need to change the father’s name from George to Arthur. Overall, this is a fun full-cast romp, though especially if you want a kids’ version that takes out some the darker things Peter does in the Barrie’s book. But I feel that the script suffers from not having a narrator. At times the characters’ lines feel stilted or they hit you over the head with certain themes rather than trust you to understand them, and the finished product felt a bit like an amateurish fan fiction.
