Historia
Owen Foster has never wanted for anything. Then his mother shows up at his elite New Orleans boarding school cradling a bombshell: his privileged life has been funded by stolen money. After using the family business, the single largest employer in his small Louisiana town, to embezzle millions and drain the employees' retirement accounts, Owen's father vanished without a trace, leaving Owen and his mother to deal with the fallout. Owen returns to Lake Cane to finish his senior year, where people he hardly remembers despise him for his father's crimes.

A beautiful story!
Revisado: 03-26-24
I picked this book because of Ashley Elston - I randomly read First Lie Wins and got hooked. I really enjoy her story telling. She sets up any story so perfectly and adds a few surprises at the end - BIG surprises!!!! You get to know the characters well and her description of things like the pecan orchard, I can imagine easily. I thought Adam Verner and Stephen Dexter did a great job of narrating.

Wonderful
Revisado: 04-24-23
I love history and stories. When combining the two, these are my favorite books to read. Rosalyn Landor is one of my favorite narrators. She did The Winter Sea and I fell in love with her voice then. I didn't realize this until 3/4 into The Last White Rose. Alison Weir does a very good job and I will be reading more of her books from now on.

Historia
The Gardener Estate is one of the most storied and beloved places on the West Coast: a magnificent house in vast formal grounds, home to a family that shaped California—and fought hard to conceal the turmoil and eccentricities within their walls. And now, just as the turmoil seems buried and the Estate prepares to move into a new future, construction work unearths a grim relic of the estate's history: a skull, hidden away some fifty years ago.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 01-10-23
After the first 5 chapters, I wondered why I got this book. It had over 50 chapters but most were fairly short. This to me was just a good old fashioned mystery and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Slow getting into the characters but it wasn't a problem - just took awhile to understand who was who.

Revisado: 01-05-23
I have to say at first I didn't like it but then realized I had the speed way too fast. I slowed it down and got into the story. The story can be a bit confusing as far as the characters go. It took me quite awhile to figure out who was who. More than halfway through the book I realized I liked these characters very much and I could easily imagine how their days were in Alaska - what it takes to live there - personalities. I give this one a big thumbs up!

This book went very slow for me at first. I couldn't get into the characters easily but I knew at some point I would get hooked. Yes, it has some very sad and terrible parts that were hard to get through. I loved ALL the details NR gives us. At first they don't seem important but then, 3/4 in the book you realize you are a part of this book now and every detail has been important. I'm very glad I stuck with it!

I really did love this book. I did not want it to end but WOW. I was involved with all the characters like we were family. The narration was over the top wonderful. All the voices were perfect for each character. I'm a little lost now and may have a difficult time finding another book I can enjoy as much.

Historia
In the autumn of 1707, old enemies from the Scottish Highlands to the Borderlands are finding common ground as they join to protest the new Union with England. An invasion is imminent as many plot to bring the exiled young Jacobite king back to Scotland to reclaim his throne, and in Edinburgh, the streets are filled with discontent and danger. Queen Anne, seeking to calm the situation, has sent money up from London for Scots who took part eight years earlier in the ill-fated Darien expedition that left Scotland all but bankrupt.

Superb Narration and story

I have loved all of Susanna Kearsley's books and planning on reading them all again. This one took me awhile to get involved. The story was well written and narrated but the names of the characters were similar and it took me awhile to really know who was who. The narrator was excellent and did well with female and children voices. Susanna has a way of making you FEEL you are in the era with the wonderful descriptions of everything - right down to the coal falling from the fire. You can feel the warmth in the room or the cold of the wind blowing in your face. Her writing is so tidy. By the end you have learned everything you needed to know - no loose ends at all (which sometimes drives me nuts). And now I miss those people whom I've recently become acquainted. I'm already looking forward to her next book!!!!

I listen to these books as I'm driving two and from work. Not often do I find a book that makes me just want to keep driving but this was the one! I loved this book and the narration was so good, I felt that I was there with all these characters. Although it bounces between generations, the story ran smoothly. I fell in love with Venice from her descriptions and I felt the anticipation of WW2 as if I was there. I was very sad to see it end but would love to read more and now I'm looking for a book that has the same WW2 Venice feel.

Fun Mystery
Revisado: 05-24-21
I love everything about the Miss Fortune Mysteries! The characters are great, never get stale. The narrator is spot on with each character and their personalities. The mystery is always a bit of a surprise. Sometimes I've been able to figure it out but only at the very end right before the truth comes out. I can't WAIT for #20. Really.... I cannot wait. I have not been able to find another series I enjoy as much as this one.
