Historia
From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

Only a few hours in
Revisado: 03-24-25
I’m only a few hours into the book but so far it’s not what I was expecting. I wanted to hear about the tyranny and stupidity of Facebook.
What I didn’t expect is (based solely on the book) that I’d feel the author is so deeply unlikeable, raised by even more deeply unlikeable parents, and the surrounded by even more deeply unlikeable people.
Wherever this is going it’s seemingly not a tale of, “David vs Goliath,” but more like, “I trained leopards to eat faces and then they ate my face and I’m outraged.”
Disappointing and I’m not sure I’ll keep up with it. But I’ll report back in if I do.

Historia
In The Unicorn Project, we follow Maxine, a senior lead developer and architect, as she is exiled to the Phoenix Project, to the horror of her friends and colleagues, as punishment for contributing to a payroll outage. She tries to survive in what feels like a heartless and uncaring bureaucracy and to work within a system where no one can get anything done without endless committees, paperwork, and approvals. One day, she is approached by a ragtag bunch of misfits who say they want to overthrow the existing order, to liberate developers, to bring joy back to technology work.

Not as good as The Phoenix Project
Revisado: 02-17-25
I loved the Phoenix Project. They say that that book is like a management level view and this book is the developer view.
Frankly I think you do need the first book to appreciate this, even though they said you don’t need it.
It’s nice that it exists and it’s an okay sequel. But it also feels less realistic and less enjoyable than the previous book.
You won’t get as much from this as you will from the Phoenix Project. Still, don’t let that stop you. You’ll want to see the characters you knew and what happens to them.

Like being there
Revisado: 02-09-25
If you’ve ever worked as IT in a large company, this book will be like you’re sitting there doing it all again. It’s very readable, frustrating, and then fun. A lot like the BOFH tales of old but less malicious. Highly recommended.

More Rom than Com (or Christmas)
Revisado: 12-18-24
I’m not a romance fan but I do like a good romcom movie and wanted a nice Christmas listen. This wasn’t it.
The main and supporting characters are so unlikeable. It’s very spicy which was unexpected and not my thing. The overall story felt unbelievable.
The narration was excellent by both male and female narrators.
Overall it was kind of okay but also not my thing and so I didn’t like the book.

One of the worst Reacher novels so far
Revisado: 12-01-24
Here are the problems with this novel having listened to every one so far.
- Every character here is a copy of Reacher. They think the same. They talk the same. It’s silly.
- There is a LOT of exposition. He’s literally explaining and having explained to him over and over what’s happening. Nobody talks like this.
- “That’s for damn sure!” and variants dozens of times over and over so it becomes almost a drinking game.
Plot wise it was not very satisfying either. The ending was ridiculous. Yes this is definitely a problem.

Disappointing but not entirely
Revisado: 09-26-24
I hated the first few hours of the book and be warned there’s a lot of sexual stuff that is uncomfortable, but with some reasoning behind it which is about two decades ahead of its time socially.
The end wraps up the trilogy for the most part. Satisfying if not a little dues ex machina.
But after the freshness of the original book and excitement of the second book, after I’ve reached the end I feel somewhat hollow about the series.
This is the third read through I’ve done of the series since it came out, fully forgetting the story each time, and feeling a little empty each time. Now, again, I can see why.
It’s not a terrible series. It has good ideas. Some of them are executed well. It has a lot of rough spots too.
One jarring thing about the narration was that the narrator changed the voices of some of the characters which had been consistent through the first two books for some reason. I have no idea why.
Should you read this series? Yes I think so. Do it. It won’t be your favourite series ever though.

Vast improvement
Revisado: 09-17-24
Vast improvement over Saturn Returns and Centoaxis. This book doesn’t try to rely on clever tricks, changing points of view/time and lyrics etc.
It’s a clear plot that reveals part of the story arc and sets things up for whatever the finale is.
I’m satisfied and will continue with the last book in the series.

Revisado: 09-03-24
I was not a fan. Again the author is relying on a narrative trick to do something which isn’t necessary except to hide that there’s not much story here. You could summarise this book, which fits between book 1 and 3 in the series, in one sentence, and you’d be better off than listening to this.
