Historia
"Forty-four percent of the American population is convinced that Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead sometime in the next 50 years," writes Sam Harris. "Imagine the consequences if any significant component of the U.S. government actually believed that the world was about to end and that its ending would be glorious. The fact that nearly half of the American population apparently believes this...should be considered a moral and intellectual emergency."

Historia
In 1959, the Soviet probe Luna 3 took the first photos of the far side of the Moon. Even in their poor resolution, the images stunned scientists: The far side is an enormous mountainous expanse, not the vast lava plains seen from Earth. Subsequent missions have confirmed this in much greater detail. How could this be, and what might it tell us about our own place in the universe? As it turns out, quite a lot. When the Earth Had Two Moons is an astonishing exploration of planet formation and the origins of life by one of the world’s most innovative planetary geologists.

Latest planetary & astronomical science wellwrittn
Revisado: 06-03-22
Compares to the work of Bill Bryson & Stephen Hawking. Writing style is engaging, succinct, and accessible, especially for a book on astrophysics. But it's much more than that. Everything is contextualized to history, current events, personal anecdotes, etc. A great listen over a few days. I feel smarter for having listened.

Historia
During the 20th century, America managed to make its economic and social systems both more and more fair and more and more prosperous. A huge, secure, and contented middle class emerged. All boats rose together. But then the New Deal gave way to the Raw Deal. Beginning in the early 1970s, by means of a long war conceived of and executed by a confederacy of big business CEOs, the superrich, and right-wing zealots, the rules and norms that made the American middle class possible were undermined and dismantled.

Everyone should listen to Kurt Andersen
Revisado: 04-09-21
There are only a few Good Geniuses like Kurt Andersen around. Not only does he have enormous academic and intellectual credibility, he has the street cred to go with it. Don't be scared... he's from the Midwest. Lots of quotations, research, and statistics to back him up. This book will make clear that most Americans are on the same page; whereas our government has become a tool of big business (the Evil Geniuses). Very well written too, and quite entertaining. Kurt Andersen for presidential advisor!

Historia
A razor-sharp thinker offers a new understanding of our post-truth world and explains the American instinct to believe in make-believe, from the Pilgrims to P. T. Barnum to Disneyland to zealots of every stripe...to Donald Trump. In this sweeping, eloquent history of America, Kurt Andersen demonstrates that what's happening in our country today - this strange, post-factual, "fake news" moment we're all living through - is not something entirely new, but rather the ultimate expression of our national character and path.

Refreshingly clear and rational
Revisado: 09-01-20
Every rational person needs to read this impeccably researched psycho-social history of the United States. Not too didactic, and with plenty of levity. I put Kurt Andersen up there with Sam Harris as one of the most intelligent people alive today. If you are strongly religious, or an acolyte of conspiracy theories, it would be an Herculean task for you to get through this book, but it explains virtually everything going on in America today.

By turns tender and terrifying, Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff captures America on the verge of political upheaval in 2016 and introduces us to a man who just might be able to save us from the oncoming horror. Yes, Bob Honey - carnival carny, sewage specialist, and government operative, among other occupations - has spent years in preparation, crisscrossing the world in the employ of a mysterious government program that pays in small bills.

Fascinating and enthralling!
Revisado: 11-26-16
Not really a story, but multiple stories and snippets within a stream-of-consciousness narrative. Touches on multiple, varied subjects, but always with great intelligence and usually wit. Ostensibly follows the life experiences of a black ops private contractor, or is he just a dharma bum?? Teaches the listener a lot about the world, about science, military thinking, psychology/marketing etc., but also about oneself. Extremely entertaining, and elicits the full gamut of emotions. I wanted it to go on forever. Contains original, licensed songs, and I appreciated the daring and creative efforts of everyone involved. Thank you!

Historia
Walden is the classic account of two years spent by Henry David Thoreau living at Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts. The story is detailed in its accounts of Thoreau's day-to-day activities, observations, and undertakings to survive out in the wilderness for two years. Thoreau's journal is an exquisite account of a man seeking a more simple life by living in harmony with nature.

This is excellent material for the adolescent nonconformist. The language and diction is rather dated, but I got accustomed to it. The reader's style is a believable facsimile of Thoreau himself perhaps, but is a touch clunky and professorial. Great slice-of-life ruminations from an early bohemian living by a deep pond in New England.

Historia
A Brilliant new translation of the great writer's least Kafkaesque novel, based on a German-language text that was produced by a team of international scholars and that is more faithful to Kafka's original manuscript than anything we have had before. With the same expert balance of precision and nuance that marked his translation of Kafka's The Castle, the award-winning translator Mark Harman now restores the humor and particularity of language to Amerika.

Kafka's least noir, but still not for everyone
Revisado: 07-17-16
Kafka's writing style is meticulously descriptive and thorough, so it will strike some as boring. His genius lies in his ability to effortlessly turn the mundane into the surreal. This story follows a highly plausible trajectory, and is entirely believable for its period and context. The protagonist's thoughts and actions are entirely rational, yet the reader/listener will often realize the total absurdity of the positions he finds himself in. This is a coming-of-age tale that could easily have been the genesis of the concept, "Truth is stranger than fiction."
I was sorry that the story had such an abrupt ending, and could have listened to it continue indefinitely. Unfortunately, it seems that K never finished this worthy tome. I know that a close associate of his added an ending that was published... perhaps that would be more conclusive and satisfying even if not from the great mind of Kafka.

Revisado: 07-01-16
Mark Twain was one of the greatest humorists ever, but there's plenty of serious material here as well. Samuel C comes off a bit arrogant in places, but I would forgive that of any great writer. Punchy non-fiction that makes one ponder. Excellent reading as well.

Historia
In 1861, young Mark Twain found himself adrift as a tenderfoot in the Wild West. Roughing It is a hilarious record of his travels over a six-year period that comes to life with his inimitable mixture of reporting, social satire, and rollicking tall tales. Twain reflects on his scuffling years mining silver in Nevada, working at a Virginia City newspaper, being downandout in San Francisco, reporting for a newspaper from Hawaii, and more.

One of Twain's greatest works
Revisado: 05-18-16
Mark Twain had some amazing experiences, and was obviously very sharp and absorbed everything around him. A better book about the migration Westward, and the goldrush, I cannot imagine. Witty, insightful, and very well narrated by Grover Gardner... I did not want it to end. Caution: this book may not be appropriate for Mormons.
