I'm glad that this book was suggested to me. I loved it so much, I bought a hard copy for my daughter. We're Filipino and it was so cool to experience a story that incorporates so much of our mythology and culture. From cryptids to ghosts and all the sprinkling of Tagalog, it was a wonderful bonus as reader to feel really seen.

I don't have too much experience with books in this genre so take my review with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book through and through. Definitely not your typical love story. A good book for anyone who's an admirer of love stories, and lovers of food, and a bit of drama and reality TV for good measure. The performance of the book was great. However, I just wish someone told Elena Rey how to properly pronounced "Reading Terminal" (redding). When she says it as "reading" it cuts deep into this native Philadelphian.

Touching, relatable memoir, especially for grieving Asian Americans

As an avid fan of the original New Yorker article that spurred this memoir, I was excited to finally enjoy it. I was extremely touched by Michelle's exploration of her grief, her culture, love of food, love of family, and rise as an artist. On a personal level, as a Philadelphian who grew up near and occasionally shops at the namesake H Mart, an Asian American who unexpectedly lost a parent, and father myself to two biracial children, as well as a food lover, I do not know if there's a personal story I'll ever relate to as much as this one. I fully empathize with the journey Michelle has been on and hearing her story has helped me process my own grief, even seven years after the passing of my father. Thank you for sharing your story, your art, and being so vulnerable to the world.
