A disappointment
Revisado: 09-26-24
After a solid first book, book 2 limped to the finish line. I don’t know if I will continue the series. It took me more than a month to finish the last 90 minutes of the book. Nothing about the series grabs me and the magic system is nonsensical.

Her singular obsession is finding the mythical Book of Brin, a tome not just lost but intentionally buried. Respected and beloved by the Teshlor Knights, not even their legendary skills can protect her for what she finds is more dangerous than what she sought.

It’s a wait and see for me
Revisado: 02-07-24
This really was an enjoyable book. However, the ending may or may not have been necessary. We really weren’t given a great explanation as to why things needed to happen the way they happened. That’s why I’m giving this four stars instead of five stars, perhaps we will learn more as we go along, which will, turn this into a five star book. But with the ending how it was, it’s a four star even three star book at this point.

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

I normally don’t do this…
Revisado: 03-10-23
This is my second book by that I’ve listened to from the narrator and author. In book 1, I guess I wasn’t aware of the age of the main character. Wow, the narrator sounds a good 25-30 years older than the main character which is a bit distracting. Plus the narrator takes loud breaths and frequent breaths that are extremely annoying. I couldn’t finish the book.

Historia
Caroline Overington's stunning fiction debut is a multi-voiced novel centred around a child's death and its terrible repercussions. In 1982 Victorian police were called to a home on a housing estate an hour west of Melbourne. There, they found a five-year-old boy lying still and silent on the carpet. There were no obvious signs of trauma, but the child, Jacob, died the next day. The story made the headlines, and hundreds attended the funeral. Few people were surprised when the boy's mother and her boyfriend went to prison for the crime.

This is the 5th book that I’ve listened to from Overington. The first two were amazing. The next two were absolutely awful. So, I didn’t know if I wanted to listen to this one. I am so thankful that I did. It is incredibly emotional and incredibly well done.

Historia
Shortly after 9.30 in the morning, a young man walks into Surf City, Bondi’s newest shopping complex. He’s wearing a dark grey hoodie - and a bomb around his neck. Just a few minutes later, he is locked in a shop on the upper floor. And trapped with him are four innocent bystanders. For police chaplain Paul Doherty, called to the scene by Senior Sergeant Boehm, it’s a story that will end as tragically as it began. For this is clearly no ordinary siege. The boy, known as Ali Khan, seems as frightened as his hostages and has yet to utter a single word.

Misses the mark again
Revisado: 02-07-23
Spoilers….. After reading 2 phenomenal books by Overington, the last two have been largely a bore. Too many cliches.
1. Priest leaving the priesthood because they’re losing their faith.
2. White personal mistreating a minority
3. Heartless and selfish businessman.
Plus, the story just meanders with no real point. It’s fine when the characters are interesting, but so few are.

Overington misses the mark
Revisado: 02-04-23
Spoilers…..This is my third novel of Overjngton’s to listen to, and for the first time she completely misses the mark. I give it 3 stars for the story because it improved a bit towards the end. But it just doesn’t hold up compared to her other works. And the narration is really bad. The Russian wife sounds like she’s a middle eastern boy. The way he said words such as “Fort Worth” and “tattoo” was extremely distracting. If this wasn’t a free option, I would have kicked it to the curb quickly.

Part of me loved it and part of me hated it because of the way the story was left hanging. I won’t say more than that, but the author is extremely talented at painting realistic scenarios and drawing you in.

Historia
It was four o'clock in the morning. A young woman pushed through the hospital doors. Staff would later say they thought the woman was a new mother, returning to her child - and in a way, she was. She walked into the nursery, where a baby girl lay sleeping. The infant didn't wake when the woman placed her gently in the shopping bag she had brought with her. There is CCTV footage of what happened next, and most Australians would have seen it, either on the internet or the news.

Wow, what a surprise
Revisado: 02-01-23
Let me say that I have no idea how I came across this book. It definitely isn’t my usual cup of tea. And honestly, after reading g up on the author, she doesn’t really seem like someone I’d like all that much on a personal level. However, I have to say that the bill was absolutely phenomenal. It was incredibly emotional but it never felt fake or manipulative. It definitely will not disappoint. I won’t get into the nuts and bolts of the sort.. There’s no reason to give anything away. But yeah, it really is just a simple story that is incredibly well told.
