Wait for the unabridged version

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 02-11-08

The flavor of the book was lost in the abridgement. The story is cut to the battle scenes, good stuff -- but not enough. Wait for the unabridged version.
The reading performance was excellent. The story great. I just missed the sauce that goes with the meat. Oh, and the abridged version is edited down from the unabridged version. You can hear audio glitches where the butchery was performed.

The Matrix meets Blade Runner

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-22-05

The noir detective atmosphere of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner combined with tech and violence of The Matrix. People have their memories and personalities stored in memory and move from body to body over centuries. Criminals are placed in storage while time takes everything they know and everyone they love, their bodies sold as "sleeves".

Brutal, not for the sqeamish story. I enjoyed it immensely.

Someone please make a movie

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-09-05

Like Bowden's "Blackhawk Down", this book would make a terrific movie script. Very few Non-fiction books are as riveting as this one. I wonder if anyone in Hollywood has the courage to make the movie?

It certainly deserves all the awards!

Terrific narration, story needs an editor...

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-09-05

This story needs brutal editing, it sounds like it was written on deadline and fueled by caffiene. A good editor would hack out huge chunks of redundant, mind numbing stuff. I found my mind wandering as the story went down the same roads over and over again. Some of the interesting plot lines were thrown away too quickly. Interesting characters and events in the story were abandoned, in favor or more useless atmosphere and scene setting.

Ms. Floyd's dramatic reading is the principle saving grace of the book. Her acting ability brought some depth to characters, that would have otherwise been flat. She gave a professional performance to material that really did not deserve her talent.

Too much focus was given to the wrong characters, we should have spent more time with the "bad guys" who were all much more interesting than the protagonist, Soledad. Too much meaningless atmosphere. Too much repetition in the narration -- like Mr. Ridley thought we would forget the motivations of his characters if we didn't hear them repeated often enough.

Trim it down, then sell it as a graphic novel or a TV movie script. It doesn't work in this medium.
