Historia
Set in contemporary Louisville, Leesa Cross-Smith's mesmerizing first novel surrounding the death of a police officer is a requiem for marriage, friendship, and family, from an author Roxane Gay has called "a consummate storyteller". Evi - a classically-trained ballerina - was nine months pregnant when her husband Eamon was killed in the line of duty on a steamy morning in July. Now, it is winter, and Eamon's adopted brother Dalton has moved in to help her raise six-month-old Noah.

inevitable ending
Revisado: 04-28-25
This book was a slow burn for me. I started to read it as a second book by the author. The other that I read I enjoyed much more (This Close to okay). the narrators made the book much more interesting than when I attempted to read it as a paperback. the story ended beautifully as it seemed inevitable to circumstances and character profiles.

Historia
Fifteen-year-old Ana Cancion never dreamed of moving to America, the way the girls she grew up with in the Dominican countryside did. But when Juan Ruiz proposes and promises to take her to New York City, she has to say yes. It doesn’t matter that he is twice her age, that there is no love between them. Their marriage is an opportunity for her entire close-knit family to eventually immigrate. So on New Year’s Day, 1965, Ana leaves behind everything she knows and becomes Ana Ruiz, a wife confined to a cold six-floor walk-up in Washington Heights.

sacrifice and cheated adolescence

I enjoyed the book. This was the first title I've read by this author. The narrator brought life to the characters and embodied them easily with her voice. I didn't read the summary so I wasn't sure what to expect with this title but found it heart wrenching in parts and triumphant in others. Good read.

Do you long for an intimate relationship with your Creator, but He seems elusive? Perhaps it is because something utterly essential is missing—the fear of the Lord. Don’t let this frighten you. Fearing God is very different than being afraid of God. It’s the key to everything.

To know Him is to love Him, to love Him is to obey Him. The fear of God is a gift I want to repeatedly open.

I love a good love story. This one incorporated an interracial couple who had to think after the fact about how to proceed with their cultural differences. I liked learning insights of Nigerian culture through the writing and the actress who read it as such.

captivating though it took me several attempts to finish it. the performance readers where amazing though at times it was hard to hear the male. i found it best to listen with Bluetooth earbuds. I am satisfied with the ending. I need to listen again straight through to catch why Roy was captured.

Historia
With a sensibility that recalls her beloved screen characters, including Yvette, Queenie, Shug, and the iconic Cookie from Empire, yet is all Taraji, the screen actress writes of her families - the one she was born into and the one she created. She shares stories of her father, a Vietnam vet who was bowed but never broken by life's challenges, and of her mother, who survived violence both in the home and on DC's volatile streets. Here, too, she opens up about her experiences as a single mother.
