Dewes killed it, again.
Revisado: 11-15-24
definitely a bit misty eyed. this was a beautiful way to end the first arc of the story and set up the next. I can't wait for the next book, though I say that at the end of every one of these books. platonic love really does keep the world going, and it's beautiful to see that represented and celebrated in literature, especially when romantic love is usually the focus of the 'unlikely duo saves the day' stories.
some small inconsistent pronunciation of a few words between narrators, but that's literally my only complaint. it's probably hardly noticable to anyone but my autistic @$$, though, so NBD.

Gripping af. Ending was great but also bleak? i don't know what I'm feeling but its A LOT. Seriously. Dewes has a way of making her characters get into my heart. I'm both dying to know what happens next while also simultaneously being afraid of what happens next. Either way I need to find out. Hoping there's a sequel, at the very least!

The Divide. It’s the edge of the universe. Now, it’s collapsing - and taking everyone and everything with it. The only ones who can stop it are the Sentinels - the recruits, exiles, and court-martialed dregs of the military. At the Divide, Adequin Rake commands the Argus. She has no resources, no comms - nothing, except for the soldiers that no one wanted.

Historia
For thousands of years, the Chiss Ascendancy has been an island of calm, a center of power, and a beacon of integrity. It is led by the Nine Ruling Families, whose leadership stands as a bulwark of stability against the Chaos of the Unknown Regions. But that stability has been eroded by a cunning foe who winnows away trust and loyalty in equal measure. Bonds of fidelity have given way to lines of division among the families. Despite the efforts of the Expansionary Defense Fleet, the Ascendancy slips closer and closer to civil war.

Historia
All Things Bright and Beautiful is the beloved sequel to Herriot's first collection, All Creatures Great and Small, and picks up as Herriot, now newly married, journeys among the remote hillside farms and valley towns of the Yorkshire Dales, caring for their inhabitants - both two- and four-legged. Throughout, Herriot's deep compassion, humor, and love of life shine as we laugh, cry, and delight in the portraits of his many varied animal patients and their equally varied owners.

much better than the old audiobook version
Revisado: 09-29-21
Ralph's Scottish accent is better (read: real) and there isn't the obnoxious background noise found in the older audiobook which is also available on audible.

Herriot continues the rich and rewarding day-to-day life of a small-town veterinarian, and we journey with him across the dales, meeting a whole new cast of unforgettable characters - humans, dogs, horses, lambs, parakeets - all of them drawn with the same infinite fascination, affection and insight that made James Herriot one of the most beloved authors of our time. And all the stories are warmly, evocatively told by the world-renowned "voice" of Dr. Herriot: Christopher Timothy.

LOTS OF BACKGROUND NOISE
Revisado: 09-28-21
I was listening using headphones, and began to hear high pitched squeaking noises. I assumed it was my dog (nope), then the game I was playing on my phone (also no) and then perhaps neighbors (the other house in the duplex is still vacant, so not that either). Finally, when I switched from headphones to playing it through my phone speakers, I realized the issue was background noise in the recording itself. So, while Christopher Timothy is a great narrator and the performance is generally good, the audio is sub-optimal. Get the 2020 version narrated by Nicholas Ralph, since his Scottish accent is better and so is the audio quality. That's what I did when I returned this one.

Historia
A real-life thriller in the vein of The Devil in the White City, Kate Winkler Dawson's debut, Death in the Air, is a gripping, historical narrative of a serial killer, an environmental disaster, and an iconic city struggling to regain its footing. In winter 1952, London automobiles and thousands of coal-burning hearths belched particulate matter into the air. But the smog that descended on December fifth of 1952 was different; it was a type that held the city hostage for five long days.

fascinating story, narrator is meh
Revisado: 04-21-21
loved the storytelling, Dawson is very gifted. the inclusion of the young girls story had me on edge until the villain was arrested--i spent much of the book on tender hooks waiting for her to become one of the victims of the killer and not just the fog. highly recommend, despite the narrator being a bit dull/monotone-y sounding at times.

takes "don't speak ill of the dead" to an extreme
Revisado: 01-11-21
Jodi Arias is a sociopathic monster who absolutely deserves to be locked up forever. She in no way was justified in killing Travis Alexander. Murdering people is never okay, and nothing Travis did to her even comes close to beginning to justify her killing him. She's a monster.
That being said, Travis wasn't the perfect sweet baby angel the author paints him to be. He absolutely was somewhat emotionally abusive and manipulative toward Jodi and other women in his life. He didn't deserve to be murdered, but he also wasn't a perfect guiltless person.
The author describes him as this lovely cheerful ball of sunshine who was a gift to all those who met him. For example, if he came to a restaurant where I worked and asked if flexing his bicep would reduce the wait time for a table, and tried to get me to touch his ass (as one anecdote about how funny and wonderful and hilarious and perfect he is describes him as doing) I'd on a good day ask him to leave because that's sexual harassment and on a bad day, slap him and kick him out for sexual harassment.
