A divorced substitute teacher living with his cat in a house his siblings want to sell, all he wants is to open a pub downtown, if only the bank will approve his loan. The Villainy of Billionaires
Revisado: 09-24-23
On the surface it’s a comedy about inheriting the family business and that business is villainy. Think SPECTRE from James Bond. Deeper down it’s a treatise on the absurdity of billionaires and the value of unions. Extremely enjoyable, hilarious, thought provoking read. Recommended!

This podcast, starting on Palm Sunday 2022 and written and read by Paula Gooder, features nine stories about nine different, but interlinked, women, originally written as Holy Week, Easter and Ascension Day reflections for Southwark Cathedral in 2021. Holy Week is a time when Christians across the world travel together as companions on the way in reflection and in prayer, focused on Jesus, the one whose suffering and death, whose resurrection and new life draws us together and makes us one. It is together, as God’s people, that we accompany Jesus in this last week of his life, and as we do ...

Thoughtful, deeply relevant and heartening
Revisado: 04-09-23
I incorporated this narrative into my Holy Week discipline for 2023. I found it thoughtful, providing a different and deeply relevant perspective of the events of Holy Week. Several of the episodes relistened to. Time well spent.

It was a drama about friendship, addiction, and loyalty (with some partial nudity thrown in, of course). And, let's not forget the case of the week. NYPD Blue exploded in the public's consciousness in 1993, and remained a presence in American homes for 12 years. For the first time, the entire run of the series is explored through a series of essays, character examinations, and trivia.

Not What I Hoped For
Revisado: 12-08-22
I just completed watching all 12 Seasons of NYPD Blue. Loved the show. Lots of things happen within the series that clearly were driven by circumstances external to the story. So, I sought a book that would shed some light on why characters left the show when they did.
This book doesn’t provide any detail that isn’t readily available online.
The author engages in no real journalism, he interviews none of the folks involved. Rather, it seems he just Googles some things.
The author shares a lot of his opinion about the series. I found those remarks tedious and mostly unsupported by anything other than his personal taste.
Terrible book.

A Must-Listen for Star Trek Enthusiasts
Revisado: 11-15-21
This is a brilliantly written novel with a very different take on the 23rd Century by the man who started it all. So many concepts shared here which were not used in the film but explored later in the franchise, or not used at all. It’s a terrific book, painting out the corners of the on-screen story. More interesting though is what the telling may reveal of the author, his perspective on male-female relationships, his vision humanity’s future. For me, this was an exploration of Gene Roddenberry. Fascinating.

Historia
It was a day like any other. Except it was our last.... It’s on this day that Pounce discovers that he is, in fact, disposable. Pounce, a styilsh "nannybot" fashioned in the shape of a plush anthropomorphic tiger, has just found a box in the attic. His box. The box he'd arrived in when he was purchased years earlier, and the box in which he'll be discarded when his human charge, eight-year-old Ezra Reinhart, no longer needs a nanny. As Pounce ponders his suddenly uncertain future, the pieces are falling into place for a robot revolution that will eradicate humankind.

Amazing, Thoroughly Enjoyable!
Revisado: 11-05-21
It’s an end of the world sort of story with friendship, loyalty and rights of the Artificially Intelligent at its center. Big ideas and personal stakes are at play. I was captivated throughout and wildly entertained by narrator Vikas Adam. Both narrative and narrator work so well together here. It is expertly produced. Cannot say enough good about this one. So good. So good.

Historia
No one knows exactly when it began or where it originated. A terrifying new plague is spreading like wildfire across the country, striking cities one by one: Boston, Detroit, Seattle. The doctors call it Draco Incendia Trychophyton. To everyone else it's Dragonscale, a highly contagious, deadly spore that marks its hosts with beautiful black and gold marks across their bodies - before causing them to burst into flames. Millions are infected; blazes erupt everywhere. There is no antidote. No one is safe.

Compelling storytelling expertly performed
Revisado: 06-06-21
Joe Hill tells a timely story of a global pandemic. The illness is terrifying and transformative. Worse though, is the horror “The Well” inflict on “The Sick.” Terrific characters. Compelling narrative.
Kate Mulgrew delivers a sublime performance. Love her character, her timing, her appreciation for the drama. Great stuff.
Stick around for the after credits scene.

Quality Time with th Rikers
Revisado: 01-31-21
I deeply love Captain Riker and Deanna Troi, so this story featuring the two and their young son hit me right between the eyes. I wanted to like this book and I did. The relationship between all three WORKS. I could have spent more time here.
Without providing any meaningful spoilers, I was a little annoyed at how strongly tied the plot here was tied to that of Picard season one. Much of the drama and suspense is diminished as you ultimately know how things will turn out.

Historia
In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. The infected turn into hyper-aggressive predators, with an insatiable desire to kill and feed. Someday soon, the soldier will have to open the hatch to his bunker, and step out into this new wasteland, to complete his mission....

Humorless survival story
Revisado: 12-27-20
This book is a competent effort in describing post-apocalyptic survival. It is very procedural in nature, the author clearly possessing deep knowledge of. military operations. The problem with the book is that is all it offers.
The lead character is one note kind of guy. Deeply serious, all business - yet easily blind sided. For such a character it is unlikely he’d be as foolish as he is about resources. But that’s what the author needed to move to the next scen4. Silly.
The world painted here is absent any humor. At all. And that’s my big problem with the book. Even in its darkest moments, humanity finds humor. This book is 8+ hours without a single chuckle.

Historia
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Legitimately Scary!
Revisado: 06-21-20
I just finished Max Brooks’ new book, Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre. It’s a survival horror novel and it is AMAZING. Legitimately scary, so well researched. Highly recommended.
I was physically tense through the final two hours
The casting is pitch perfect.
The ending is well-earned, very satisfying.
