I like this series, and I love the narration by Zachary Quinto. This one wasn’t as good as the first, but it was still interesting. The only thing that grated is that the author got so much about the “translator” wrong that a simple google search would’ve fixed — for one thing, a translator doesn’t work in person, they mostly translate documents. The word he wanted is interpreter. And the interpreter’s comment about “knowing every word that was said because he translated it” is pretty false, too. Interpreting requires short term memory — it’s rare for the interpreter to remember more than the gist of what was said because of how short term memory works. Does this matter to the book? Not really. But it was annoying when it could’ve been done much more accurately.

I thought this was by far the weakest of the Creature Feature series. It's a bit dull, not scary, and the narration left a lot to be desired.

Intriguing in the first half and the beginning of the second, but is weak towards the end with a lack of suspense or real bad guy, and too many explanatory monologues.

The narrator doesn't do this book any favors.

I have read so many absolutely mediocre “thrillers” in the last few years that I’m always sort of shocked when one is good. This one was good. The story was solid, the twists were twisty enough even if I saw a few coming, and the loose ends were actually tied up! Amazing how few books actually manage those things. Parts were far-fetched, of course, but it is fiction after all.

Narrator was excellent.

As much as I love to read, I'm cranky and picky, especially when it comes to books everyone else seems to love. But RUN, do not walk, to Remarkably Bright Creatures if you haven't read it yet. Beautiful, touching, funny story with lovely characters and an octopus. 🐙💕 I just adored it.

Excellent little gothic tale

The atmosphere is palpable in this gothic tale of murder and betrayal and isolation. There are multiple twists and turns I did not see coming. I read the author's other book "The Last House on Needless Street" and though that one is more well known, I thought this one was better. The narrator's soft Scottish burr is lovely.

Not much new if you listen to the podcast

I just found the Redhanded podcast a month or so ago and have binged literally all 200+ episodes of it in that time. And it's maybe (probably) because I've listened to them all so recently that I feel like there's not much new in this book. There were so many mentions of "saving that for the book" in the podcast that I thought there would be new cases talked about, but they had already done most of the cases in the book in the podcast. I saw another review that said this would be a good book for someone new to true crime and I agree - but most people who have been into it for years won't find much new here. Still, I'm proud of the girls for publishing a book and I wish them continued success.

Also there is an interview at the end of the book with a fiction writer and it is cringe. It could've used a good bit of editing - way too many "oh yeah" and "uh huh" by Hannah and Suruthi, like they were trying to make sure they were heard without adding anything. I'm guessing it was a last-minute add since they had to chop the other interview?

This book reinforces the adage that "hurt people hurt people," which should make it unbearable to read but it was so well done that it doesn't. The book gradually spools out more and more details of Chrissie's/Julia's life and we begin to see why Chrissie/Julia acts the way she does (all bolstered by the author's degree in psychology from Oxford). It is such a fascinating, engrossing book - even funny and hopeful - and amazing that it's the author's first fiction novel. I didn't want to put it down but I also really didn't want it to end.

If you're sensitive to child abuse and neglect content, this might not be the book for you, but I will say that none of it is gratuitous and it all fits into the overall novel.

Narration was excellent.

I'm not sure Follett can ever truly replicate Pillars of the Earth, but I am still so impressed with how he can weave a fascinating tale about 1000AD that makes life back then seem relatable and still relevant. And can draw me in for 25 hours of reading.

If you're like me, you decided to read this after watching The Queen's Gambit on Netflix. The adage of "the book is always better" doesn't really apply here because the makers of the series followed the book almost exactly. It's one of the closest book-series adaptations I've seen. Because of that, if you're looking for the same story because you loved the series, you won't be disappointed. That said, there's very little new here if that's the case, and I think the series did a little bit better job showing Beth's personality.

The narrator was fine, but not great. Very flat tone.
