Historia
US intelligence is reporting turmoil in the Russian navy. Their deadliest submarine, the Belgorod, has unexpectedly launched, and taken along with it a long list of questions. Who authorized the departure? What mission is it on? And, most disturbing of all, what weapons do the giant doors on the sub’s bow hide? It's been four decades since a similar incident with the Soviet sub, Red October, ended happily, thanks to a young CIA analyst named Jack Ryan.

Hunt for Red October redone
Revisado: 06-18-24
Overall I enjoyed the story. I could have done without multiple references to the Hunt for Red October movie given that there would not have been a movie in the Jack Ryan universe. The plot was good. But, elements were stolen from THFRO and didn't really add much to the plot.

Badly Edited and Translated
Revisado: 06-06-24
I wanted to enjoy this. But, the translation is way too literal. There's no effort to make idiomatic adjustments. And, worse, the book seems to have a lot of editing errors. The reader read them verbatim. He's also very flat.

Well acted and a great turn on Sherlock Holmes
Revisado: 12-13-23
I really enjoyed this. It was really well acted and a lot of fun to hear Sherlock Holmes turned on its ear. The only problem I had is that it sounds like it was recorded through a cellphone that was in someone's pocket . . .
If you can get past that, it's really worth a listen!

Historia
The time is World War II. The place is a brutal prison camp deep in Japanese-occupied territory. Here, within the seething mass of humanity, one man, an American corporal, seeks dominance over both captives and captors alike. His weapons are human courage, unblinking understanding of human weaknesses, and total willingness to exploit every opportunity to enlarge his power and corrupt or destroy anyone who stands in his path.

A great book for people who love Clavell
Revisado: 11-29-22
This was Clavell's first novel despite being book 4 in the Asian Saga chronologically. It's a fictionalized version of his real life experience as a POW in Chengi Prison. It's definitely shorter and less detailed than many of his other books. But, I really enjoyed the characters.

Very long, but worth it.
Revisado: 11-29-22
Clavell's novels are all about the details. This one doesn't disappoint. While only marginally connected to the Noble House and not in China, Clavell still shows off his ability to get inside the mindset of both his characters and the culture around them. The Islamic revolution in Iran is a fascinating backdrop to the story. And, given the recent events in Iran today, I felt this book really gave me some insight into what was going on.

Hampered by a so-so narrator
Revisado: 06-28-21
The latest installment in a great series. But, the new narrator should be encouraged to listen to the other books and at least agree roughly upon the pronunciation of names. Also, her French and Portuguese pronunciations were painful to listen to. The story was good, but a bit less intriguing than the others in the series . . .

Weirdly convenient plot

I'm a big fan of the series. But, this was really contrived. All of the players randomly happen to be in the same Montana town?!? Will Patton is always good, though.

Kristen Leonard is done with setups. She’s not interested in your son or your nephew or your butcher or the guy who mows your lawn, thank you very much, grandma! After all, she’s a modern woman - she’ll take her chances on the algorithms of online dating to find her ideal man. Before long, she meets a man who might just be the one - he’s hilarious, quick-witted, and full of heart. Vapid and stupidly acted
Revisado: 02-05-19
Letting alone the plot line, which was typical RomCom fodder, the writing was just lacking in any detail. (E.g. A sassy grandma who likes cars would probably talk about the details of said car, not just the color and make.)
More importantly, you spent the money on male and female actors, yet you have them read parts across genders. Seriously?!? Voice the characters consistently or don't bother hiring actors. The only time this was done was in simulating text messages?!? Why??????
I'm glad I didn't pay for this tripe.

Historia
Sinclair Rutherford is a young Seattle cop with a taste for the finer things. Doing menial tasks and getting hassled by superiors he doesn't respect are definitely not "finer things". Good police work and bad luck lead him to crack a case that changes quickly from a career-making break into a high-profile humiliation when footage of his pursuit of the suspect - wildly inappropriate murder weapon in hand - becomes an Internet sensation.

Revisado: 10-18-18
I found this after listening to, and enjoying, the Magic 2.0 series. This book was funny, clever, and well written. Like most books by Scott Meyer, there's a nice blend of humor, technology, and insight into his characters' mental processes. I find the characters relatable, their reactions to situations are similar to mine.
