Historia
Originally published in 1778, Evelina is Frances Burney's first and most beloved novel. It was a landmark in the development of the novel of manners and went on to influence such enduringly popular authors as Jane Austen. By turns hilarious and grim, witty and lyrical, the story follows young Evelina as she leaves the seclusion of her country home and enters into late eighteenth-century London society - both its pleasures and its dangers. Life in eighteenth-century England is vividly rendered as Evelina is educated in the ways of the world and, eventually, love.

Excellent readers of a classic work
Revisado: 08-09-24
Fanny Burney carries us along the roller coaster ride of a naive young girl learning, mostly the hard way, how to be out in society. What a disappointment to have a stupid epilogue given by someone who knows nothing of the writer or her monumental place in British literature! Skip it, and let the book stand on its own, as it well can.

A Self-Assessment
Revisado: 06-12-24
I think that Prof. Loury was pretty brutally honest about his professional and personal lives, and they were definitely two separate experiences. It was fascinating to hear how he rationalized his behavior, but he seems unable to understand WHY he pursued the dual paths he vividly describes. An interesting memoir for where it does and doesn’t go.

More is known about Muhammad than any other major religion founder, yet he remains mysterious.

In The Wife of Bath, Marion Turner tells the fascinating story of where Chaucer’s favourite character came from, how she related to real medieval women, and where her many travels have taken her since the fourteenth century, from Falstaff and Molly Bloom to #MeToo and Black Lives Matter.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 10-30-23
I so enjoyed listening to this book. I loved the way Turner put the wife of Bath into her historical context, examined how she has been edited and mutated by various authors through the centuries, and how her true voice is finally being heard again through her literary descendants. Well written, well read. Keep them coming, Marion Turner!

A Well Named Novel
Revisado: 05-22-20
I am really enjoying Phillip Pullman’s novels during this period of sheltering at home. Anton Lesser brings the characters to life, and it is a treat to escape into Sally Lockhart’s adventures. The title is cleverly apt, a theme woven into every chapter but made explicit only toward the end.

Historia
Two-thirds of us have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience, or ACE, such as abuse, neglect, parental substance dependence, or mental illness. Even though these events may have occurred long ago, they have the power to haunt us long into adulthood, and now we have found that they may even contribute to lifelong illness. Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, the founder/CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness and recipient of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award, expands on similar topics as in her popular TED talk.

Mandatory Reading for pediatricians, school administrators and political leaders
Revisado: 02-08-18
I found this book to be profoundly resonant, offering a pathway to healing for both families and communities, to stop blaming and start repairing the damage caused by extreme stress. Dr. Harrris’s reading of her book makes it a more personal story and I was glad I was able to literally hear her voice in the telling of this important story.
