What an inspiring book
Revisado: 08-16-24
Elizabeth Edwards had a golden life. And then tragedy struck. After the death of their son, which she never could really overcome ,her misfortunes only multiplied. She really had a uniquely sad and difficult life . But she grew determined not to be identified as a victim, though she certainly was one. She decided to make something of her greatly diminished life. The reader marvels at her strength of character in the face of extreme physical frailty and emotional challenge. I t has helped me personally during a time of crisis in my own life.

Historia
Sherlock Holmes is the greatest detective in literary history. For the first time since the death of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a new Holmes story has been sanctioned by his estate, whetting the appetites of fans everywhere. Information about the book will be revealed as deliberately as Holmes himself would unravel a knotty case, but bestselling novelist and Holmes expert Anthony Horowitz is sure to bring a compelling, atmospheric story to life.

Brilliant combination of author and narrator
Revisado: 02-17-24
Anthony Horowitz channeling Arther Conan Doyle plus narration/performance by the incomparable Derek Jacobi was bound to terrific, and it is. I think that Horowitz was commissioned by the ACD estate to complete an unfinished manuscript by ACD, though I have not checked this out. Horowitz is a fantastic mystery writer, both for television and in his own novels. His imagination seems to be boundless. The plot of this one turns, then turns again, the just when you think it is closing in, there is yet another twist. It is really amazing, and also such a deft evocation of the style and Victorian era of ACD. and London milieu of Sherlock Holmes. (One slightly negative note is that I did actually find the Dickensian plight of the street urchins very distressing, especially the victimization. It didn't feel like just entertainment. ) With Derek Jacobi, one of England's finest living actors, brought it all vividly to life. Kept me awake and listening in the dark for hours!

Revisado: 07-17-23
I concur with the high ratings awarded this excellent fact-based historical novel. The work of the Bletchley code breakers was a historical moment of great significance and Quinn’s dramatization of this episode through unforgettable characters based on real people is so exciting to read. The enchanting narration makes this riveting listening. I am amazed by the narrator’s skill in using unique voices for each of the characters. Really a good book and superb Audible experience.

Historia
Arthur Miller's plays have held the world's stages for almost half a century. Among them are Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, and All My Sons, which have been read and performed countless times across the world. His memoir, Timebends, shows that the life of the man is as compelling as his plays. With passion, wit and candour, Miller recalls his childhood in Harlem and Brooklyn in the 1920s and the Depression; his successes and failures in the theatre and in Hollywood; the formation of his political beliefs....

A truly absorbing autobiography by one of America’s most important playwrights
Revisado: 12-01-22
I enjoyed reading about Miller’s origins and development into the important theater voice he became. Of course I had an ogling fascination with how he and Marilyn Monroe ever became a couple, but that turned out to be a far more poignant story than I expected.
His thoughts all the way along about the human cost of capitalism and his later concerns with the threats and hopes for the American future are well worth ready.
Quite well narrated by Peter Marinker. You forget that it is not actually Miller’s own voice.
Highly recommend

Historia
Underneath Majella’s seemingly ordinary life are the facts that she doesn’t know where her father is and that every person in her town has been changed by the lingering divide between Protestants and Catholics. When Majella’s predictable existence is upended by the death of her granny, she comes to realize there may be more to life than the gossips of Aghybogey, the pub, and the chip shop. In fact, there just may be a whole big world outside her small town.

Extraordinary narration
Revisado: 12-13-20
This mystery is actually a sensitive if gritty novel of a quiet, unremarkable life. The decency and struggle of the main character is revealed through the accretion of small details and small actions . There is a lot of focus on body functions and the wretched food she prepares and consumes both at home and at the squalid pub where she serves as cook. But she inspires real sympathy and concern, and the reader cheers when life unexpectedly deals her a transformative reward. The marvelous narration is in an Irish accent so rich that phrases can be difficult for an American reader to catch . I listened twice through specifically because I just enjoyed hearing it.

Historia
Majella is happiest out of the spotlight, away from her neighbors’ stares and the gossips of the small town in Northern Ireland where she grew up just after the Troubles. She lives a quiet life caring for her alcoholic mother, working in the local chip shop, watching the regular customers come and go. But underneath Majella’s seemingly ordinary life are the facts that she doesn’t know where her father is and that every person in her town has been changed by the lingering divide between Protestants and Catholics.

Interesting crime novel set in Ireland
Revisado: 10-10-19
I enjoyed this crime novel, with its interesting setup--the relationship of two sisters in the Dublin police --and enchanting narration ( I love the lovely lilt of Irish accents ) This narrator is also a skilfull dramatic performer. The plot is not complex but it is adequate and the characters are well drawn. I did not guess the resolution of the crime before the end!

Historia
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Expats. Kate Moore is back in a pulse-pounding thriller to discover that a massive terror attack across Paris is not what it seems - and that it involves her family. On the nearby rue de Rivoli, Mahmoud Khalid climbs out of an electrician’s van and elbows his way into the crowded courtyard of the world’s largest museum. He sets down his metal briefcase, and removes his windbreaker. That’s when people start to scream.

A thriller at ease with technology and the culture of our time
Revisado: 05-22-19
This entertaining thriller is so smart and contemporary you won't want to put it down. I enjoyed how savvy and at ease the writing is about technology and the big role it plays in our world. The main character , a woman, named Kate , is a credible working mom and only slightly less believable security professional. The international atmosphere is appealing, especially Paris. There are quite a few characters and It was quite difficult to follow each of their stories. But in general at this is the best espionage type thriller I've read in a long time. Narration w

Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

A riveting account of growing up with extreme religious fundamentalism and the author's struggle to escape it
Revisado: 10-18-18
Julia Whelan is the perfect narrator to bring Tara Westover's extraordinary memoir to life. I was riveted by every page as this tale of growing up in a rigid family culture of extreme religious fundamentalism, combined with survivalist paranoia, the subjection pf women, and outright madness. The.crazy logic of these ideas lead to violence and unintentional but severe failure to protect the children, who are not permitted to go to school or doctors. All the while you are wondering how any child of this family can have possibly metamorphosed into the clear -headed, intelligent writer of the story. It is a terrific book and a terrific performance.

A consideration of choices around motherhood and their impact
Revisado: 06-29-18
I almost didn't listen to this book in its entirety, put off by the flat, teenagers tone and what I thought would be a simplistic and boring high school, story. I'm glad I kept going.. The plot unfurled and turned and turned again. I ended up listening hour after hour into the night to find out what happens, It is a mulli-angled view of what it means to choose to be a mother, or not, and the unintended consequences of these choices. It does have a young adult feel, and yet at least three of the important characters are adult women. It also does miss being a literary novel, and the characters are a little underdeveloped but the writing is strong and the plot twists are convincing. I thought it was a brilliant title, and it is a fitting one. I see why this novel has been such a success .
