Both narrator and author work together so well. I adored this book and love Kingfisher’s ability to weave the supernatural and scientific.

It's not that it's bad; it's just not for me.
Revisado: 04-03-24
If you like the feel of a delicious trashy romance with over the top tropes and gushing crushes, this will be perfect for you.
It's just not my thing. I wanted to try this book because so many people in my circles liked it, but frankly it's just... not for me.
Also of note, if you're in education, this hits home on a lot of things and does feel real to the point that some of my teaching ptsd hit during the listen, which was another reason this book just isn't for me.
Get it if you love romance, because this will be perfect for you <3

Historia
New York City, 1922. Nicolás Caraveo, a 17-year-old transgender boy from Wisconsin, has no interest in the city’s glamor. Going to New York is all about establishing himself as a young professional, which could set up his future—and his life as a man—and benefit his family. Nick rents a small house in West Egg from his 18-year-old cousin, Daisy Fabrega, who lives in fashionable East Egg near her wealthy fiancé, Tom—and Nick is shocked to find that his cousin now goes by Daisy Fay, has erased all signs of her Latina heritage, and now passes seamlessly as white.

It’s about the longing.
Avi once again hit it out of the park with their performance. Absolutely fantastic read!
McLemore, thank you for writing this. It’s about the /longing/. You sewed it into each word and phrase, and the twist near the end gripped my heart with the weight of a thousand pearls.
This book was so good, I may actually read the original Gatsby lol.

Historia
All is not well in the city that never sleeps. Even though the avatars of New York City have temporarily managed to stop the Woman in White from invading—and destroying the entire universe in the process—the mysterious capital "E" Enemy has more subtle powers at her disposal. A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and "law and order" may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside.

We are a puddle of emotions
Revisado: 11-19-22
Absolutely fantastic. I loved this entire book, both books, the wait was so dearly worth it. I loved the ending, the middle, and I guess the beginning wasn’t too bad either. The concepts of the Ur (not sure how it’s spelled because audiobook) were fantastic, and I just cannot sing this book’s praises enough!
Thank you to N. K. Jemisin and Robin Miles, this book was amazing!

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Fantastic Retelling
Revisado: 08-20-21
I loved this story, from beginning to end, I devoured it. Each piece of the story fits so well, and gave it all a much more intimate feel. I hated reading The Iliad, Aeneid, and Odyssey when I was in college and high school, but had it been at this very human level I would have loved it. I also really appreciate the attention to detail and obvious research that went into this book. Absolutely stunning, and I loved it.
To the voice actor, you did a great job. When men read books, they often have same-voice syndrome, but I could absolutely tell the difference in each character and loved your differentiations. Also just a calming timber in general (when not at the height of excitement). Great work to you as well!

Historia
Girls team up to overthrow the kingdom in this unique and powerful retelling of Cinderella from a stunning new voice that’s perfect for fans of A Curse So Dark and Lonely. It’s 200 years after Cinderella found her prince, but the fairy tale is over. Teen girls are now required to appear at the Annual Ball, where the men of the kingdom select wives based on a girl’s display of finery. If a suitable match is not found, the girls not chosen are never heard from again.

Voice issues
Revisado: 08-19-21
Unfortunately, I could not finish this book, I couldn’t even get through three chapters. The voice acting is too bright and crisp for me. Nothing wrong with that, just personal preference. I hope to be able to buy a physical copy of this book so I can read it on my own.
Thank you

Think about what you’re looking for.
Revisado: 06-24-20
Overall, this book was entertaining and I did want to get to the end and understand.
However, this author makes some choices in writing that I’m not sure I agree with. The way things are revealed in a way that clicks many pieces of the puzzle together, but upsets other pieces that are then never addressed.
Overall, not a bad book, but think about what you are actually looking for first.

Historia
On the day the government decrees that women are no longer allowed more than 100 words daily, Dr. Jean McClellan is in denial. This can't happen here. Not in America. Not to her. This is just the beginning. Soon women are not permitted to hold jobs. Girls are no longer taught to read or write. Females no longer have a voice. Before, the average person spoke 16,000 words a day, but now women only have 100 to make themselves heard. But this is not the end. For herself, her daughter, and every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice.

The Handmaid’s Tale But about our words
Revisado: 01-21-19
Vox was recommended to me by a teacher friend. She told me if I like Handmaid’s Tale, I’d love this. What she described; a dystopia where women are not used for sex or child rearing, but as nearly mute slaves to a patriarchal government... I was in for the whole ride.
The one downside to this book is that it keeps you angry the whole time, which is great when facing injustices and trying to punch Nazis, not great when you’re trying to do mundane tasks like order coffee or clean the house.
Be careful of the ending. It’s... it’s something we have all seen in books done to men, so I like the trope switch... but it still feels like lazy writing, even if it is done pointedly so.
Wonderful book, will be recommending to every woman and man I can talk to.
