But they are quite surprised when they scan the dog's embedded chip, and discover that they know this dog. He is the "DNA dog".

An aging, long time sheriff dies in his fishing cabin of an apparent suicide. The son of the sheriff's life-long friend is patrol sergeant Dave Harbinger. Dave questions why the sheriff would commit suicide and if so why do it the way he did. Dave is determined to get to the bottom of the sheriff's death. As he digs he finds himself on a roller coaster ride of mystery and intrigue, with drug dealing, political corruption and deceit at every turn.

John Puller's mother disappeared nearly 30 years ago. Despite an intensive search and investigation, she was never seen again. But new allegations have come to light suggesting that Puller's father - now suffering from dementia and living in a VA hospital - may have murdered his wife. Puller is officially barred from working on the case and faces a potential court-martial if he disobeys the order, but he knows he can't sit this investigation out.

Defense lawyer Andy Carpenter usually tries to avoid taking on new cases at all costs. But this time, he's happy - eager, even - to take the case that's just come his way. Andy's long-time friend Martha "Pups" Boyer takes in stray puppies that the local dog rescue center can't handle, raises them until they're old enough to adopt, and then finds good homes for them. Not everyone admires the work Pups does as much as Andy does, however.
