I only finished this because my book club chose it

The narrator used a bored, whiny tone at the beginning that drove me crazy. I now understand the purpose - the main character was dynamic. By that, I mean that a 30 year old woman had the maturity of a middle schooler at the beginning of the book grew up a bit. This seemed more like a YA book.

Almost didn’t finish it

James Garner was always one of our favorites and I’d been wanting to read his biography for a long time. The narrative style really a turn off - the blasé monotone was almost more than we could bear. But we were intrigued by the story and we sped up the narration about 10%. We’re glad we stuck with it.

An honest and moving story

We were so moved by the honesty of the story. The shared narrative moves flawlessly between the two brothers, and they are both superb narrators.

Creative Twist on Huckleberry Finn

This was a WOW!

Mel Brooks’ story was so funny and engaging but his narration made it fabulous. We felt like we were sitting at a family party listening to an hilarious relative tell stories. And it made us want to go back and watch his movies again. This audiobook is a genuine treasure.

A story that needed telling

I liked this even better than The Boys in the Boat. The only negative for me was the narration. The narrator had a fine voice that was pleasant to listen to. But it seems to me that there should be an editor who helps the narrator avoid mispronunciations, just as an editor helps the author avoid misspelling. The frequent mispronunciations of Pacific Northwest towns (Spokane, Puyallup) were noticeable, as were the frequent eliding of the letter “d” (di’nt” for “didn’t”). This is a fairly academic book, so I didn’t expect it.

Alan Alda as author and storyteller- what could be better?

This book was an absolutely delightful way to learn about communication. We had many “aha” moments as we listened. And Alan Alda was a joy to listen to.

Great story, great narrator

I liked the story very much, but I especially appreciated the narrator. Her voice was pleasant, and I don’t remember hearing any mispronunciations, unlike other books I’ve listened to recently.

Open, Honest, Poetic, Thought-provoking

Bono is a terrific narrator. He bares his soul - successes and mistakes, along his spiritual journey. He gives full credit to those who helped him along the way. Punk isn’t my favorite genre, but I’ve added several more U2 songs to my playlist while listening to this book.
