Historia
Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

I found the structure of the story very interesting. It led me on. And I liked the somewhat enigmatic ending. Sometimes there was too much detail — repetitive adjectives or similes.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Great book, not great narration
Revisado: 05-07-23
This is a well written, deeply researched telling of an almost unbelievable tale. I thoroughly enjoyed and was continuously wide-eyed at the story itself. Unfortunately, the narrator over-acted in all the most exciting passages, reading breathlessly and with desperate, almost comic intensity through paragraphs that were written with plenty of drama. They needed none of the corny dramatic interpretation that was slathered on. Also, there were a few pretty egregious mispronunciations of both English and commonly used foreign words. I recommend the book, but I wish the reading could be edited to erase the silly errors and childish passages of narration.

Historia
A biting satire about a young man's isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, Paul Beatty's The Sellout showcases a comic genius at the top of his game. It challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality: the black Chinese restaurant.

Great book, great performance
Revisado: 01-16-17
This is a scathing book in which no one escapes Beatty's whip, but white dominance is especially hard beaten. It's a laugh out loud, wonderfully literary piece of writing. The narration is pitch perfect and insightful.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Almost really good
Revisado: 10-05-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend it, though with reservations. It's too long. Where are editors these days?!
What other book might you compare The Nix to and why?
It's certainly in the tradition of epic length novels with complicated stories. I found some of the subplots totally extraneous, however, where a great novel like Let The Great World Spin has complication that is all justifiable.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Ari Fliakos' performance was OK, but I thought he overacted some of the passages. The writing was also overwrought, so it made for places in the narrative where I felt assaulted by the work. He did a great job with most of the voices, and, as long as he was staying chill in his reading, he was excellent.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Nope.

The extraordinary Siddhartha Mukherjee has written a biography of the gene as deft, brilliant, and illuminating as his extraordinarily successful biography of cancer. Weaving science, social history, and personal narrative to tell us the story of one of the most important conceptual breakthroughs of modern times, Mukherjee animates the quest to understand human heredity and its surprising influence on our lives, personalities, identities, fates, and choices.

A fascinating, beautifully written & read book
Revisado: 09-10-16
Would you consider the audio edition of The Gene to be better than the print version?
No, they are both worth every minute of the reader's time. Because the science is at times quite convoluted, it's great to have the print or ebook to refer to.
Who was your favorite character and why?
NA--too many historic and present day characters, human and otherwise...
What does Dennis Boutsikaris bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He is a GREAT reader. For starters, he knows how to pronounce the English language. Thank you, Dennis! He reads with obvious understanding of the context, adding just the nuanced tones of voice needed to make the difficult (at times) language and construction of the information very clear. It's an extraordinary performance!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, no. Way too much information.
Any additional comments?
This is a great book of science for the lay reader. Because so much of our medicine and possibly social planning will depend on understanding genetic discovery, this is a good read for anyone wanting to feel informed about today's science.

Excellent Book, Excellent Reader
Revisado: 08-17-12
Where does Wolf Hall rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Very high. This is a great story, beautifully researched, written, and then the choice of readers is also excellent.
What did you like best about this story?
Plot, writing, characterization, and performance. In short, the whole enchalada.
Have you listened to any of Simon Slater’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but I would follow his readings anywhere! I am disappointed that he's not performing BRING UP THE BODIES, but I also love Simon Vance's reading.

Country Driving
Revisado: 03-22-10
Hessler's book is full of fascinating information about China today and its history. I would give the audiobook five stars if I liked Peter Berkrot's reading, but I don't. He has a strange inflection that is a sort of throwback to radio announcers' voices before 1960, and his interpretation of a Chinese person speaking English is downright embarrassing. Hessler's writing of dialogue is, of course, translation of conversations he had that were carried out in Chinese, for the most part. Why Berkrot feels he has to read those parts in an ersatz Chinese accent is beyond me. I listened to the whole thing and really enjoyed the text, but the reading had me gritting my teeth far too much of the time.

Historia
As a National Public Radio reporter covering the last stand of the Taliban in Afghanistan's southern borderland, Sarah Chayes became deeply immersed in the attempt to rebuild a broken nation. With her NPR assignment finished in early 2002, she left reporting to help turn around the country's fortunes, accepting a job running a nonprofit founded by President Hamid Karzai's brother. With remarkable access to leading players in the postwar government, Chayes witnessed a tragic, perverse turn of events.

Terrible performance
Revisado: 03-08-08
Like Joshua, who has a review written in this section, I am horrified by the terrible reading that Renee Raudman gives this otherwise excellent book. Who is the sound editor or producer who allowed the massacre of Chayes' fine language to escape the studio? And who chose her to read when the voice of the book, as well as Chayes' actual voice, is intense, sharp, and always insistent? Raudman reads as though she is trying to calm a young child. That is certainly not the intent of the book!
I suggest that people buy a hardcopy of The Punishment of Virtue rather than endure its dreadful performance.
