Historia
John Eric Carver and Shrek are a retired Navy SEAL war dog team, now living in the mountains outside of San Diego. Both man and dog thought their life was settled, finding peace on a 40-acre ranch. But a mutated virus changes everything. Taking refuge in a nearby Boy Scout camp, John leads a group of teens and their parents as they are forced to deal with infected creatures that are consuming the world. Lost Valley takes the listener through the first months of the apocalypse that threatens humanity.

Weird pacing and silly story, but great Narration

First, I understand the end of the world books need to move the disaster back story part of the book along, but the whole world hits a zombie apocalypse from patient zero to all USA in a handful of days? Made no sense. How the zombies infect also changed 1/2 way though the book. To top it off, the survivors collectively realized that the end of the world was happening at the first hint of the crisis.
I could set that all aside, and fall into the story if the characters were ok. Nope. The main character might have just been named Joe Cool and the book be called Joe Cool does irrational dangerous stuff in a cool way. This book talks about only inviting survivors who can add to the party survival, not your best friend from school. The other major plot centers around the military and they go out of their secure base not to rescue any survivors found, but for the family members of the servicemen. The best end of the world books explore what it means to be human under terrible situations.

Historia
An EMT in 2042 San Diego, Jack knows he won't survive the impact of the massive asteroid hurtling towards Earth. After all, he's not one of the handful of lucky lottery winners scheduled for rescue. But he did luck into a NexGenVR capsule, which means Jack can risk a one-way trip to the virtual reality world of Viridan Gate Online, a completely immersive online multiplayer fantasy role-playing game, or RPG.

I usually have very low expectations for litrpg books and tried it since is was a free plus membership book. I was very surprised at how well this book was written. Good pacing, intresting characters and a realistic world they are exploring. Only downside is when the narrator "stage shouts" he gets a weird tune to his voice.
Definitely give this book a try. Looking forward to reading the whole series.

Jack Mitchell knows he won't survive the impact of the massive asteroid hurtling towards Earth. He's not one of the handful of lucky lottery winners scheduled for rescue. But he did luck into a NexGenVR capsule, which means Jack can risk a one-way trip to the world of Viridan Gate Online (V.G.O.), an ultra-immersive fantasy role-playing game. Taking that leap of faith, though, means permanently trapping his mind in the game and killing his body in the process.
