Verity Fitzroy and the Ministry Seven have the run of London, and that is the way they like it. While she loses herself in machines and adventures, and the work they get from the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences, why her parents were killed remains a mystery she can't leave alone.

Brilliant story, but...
Revisado: 07-11-21
I love the stories that this author duo writes! Plot, pacing, characters, dialog, and pathos are all spot-on! I just wish that they wouldn't narrate their own stories. Ms. Ballantine by herself (themself?) is not bad overall, but doesn't stay in the accent. One of the street urchins (Ministry Seven) was supposedly from the East End, but from listening to Ballantine, you would think that the kid was from Down Under (Australia). All of the adult women characters had the same voice.
However, many of the rest of the characters had correct accents and Ballantine's vocal characterizations made the rest of the characters solidly identifiable. I just wish that the authors had been able to stick with the fellow who narrated the first couple of Ministry of Peculiar Occurances books, but perhaps he is dead? Dunno, I haven't researched him.

Historia
Buying into the dream that education is the road out of poverty, a teen mom takes a chance on bettering herself, gets on welfare rolls, and talks her way into college. But once she's there, phallocratic narratives permeate every subject, and creative writing professors depend heavily on Freytag's pyramid to analyze life. So Ariel turns to a rich subcultural canon of resistance and failure, populated by writers like Audre Lorde, Tillie Olsen, and Kathy Acker. Wryly riffing on feminist literary tropes, We Were Witches documents the survival of a demonized single mother.

Captivating
Revisado: 06-23-21
I love how Ms. Gore circled back to previous stories, literary quotes, fairy tales, and spells to illustrate her life and growing sense of self. I was blown away by several of the conclusions she drew from the various research lines she studied, then synthesised.
This was not an easy book to listen to: it was brutally, heart- breakingly honest. It was, however, an important book. In addition to recommending it to several of my friends, I also plan on picking up a physical copy. This has become an increasingly rare occurrence for me, as I recently donated, sold, or gave away 10 boxes of books, and Kindlized as many as I could. But a physical copy sounds right: I want to dog-ear the pages, put colorful flags to mark things, and write all over this book.
Thank you, Ms. Gore, for your everyday courage to just keep living, trying to create your best life.

There is no time to rest for Eliza D. Braun and Wellington Thornhill Books. The man who has haunted and hounded them since the fall of the Maestro, Doctor Henry Jekyll, is now on a killing spree, using bizarre, theatrical murders as a way to taunt their inability to capture him. It falls on Books and Braun to turn the tables on Jekyll and bring him to justice. As Wellington and Eliza continue their pursuit of the madman, Jekyll, the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences stand against a recent surge in House of Usher activity.

I wish the authors had been consistent: one of them does Eliza's voice, one Welly's, etc.

Story over-detailed in some places, but was due to in-character reverence. Still amazing story! Loved!
