I find stupid protagonists annoying.

The author attempted to create tension by dragging out the obvious. I almost DNF. However, just when I was ready to throw in the towel, the protagonist broke through and made progress and I kept listening.

Amazing prose. Heartbreaking tale.

This felt almost like poetry. The prose was beautiful and powerful without becoming purple. The action was excellent and the scenes well done.

Characters acting out of character

The ending was predictable. We all knew what would happen. My issue was that one of the character acted completely out of character to get there. The betrayal of character reminded me of GoT season 8, if that helps.

The trope used for tension is my pet peeve

The house witch was charming. The first two book in the burning. Witch we're not quite as good but still entertaining. I quit this series on book 3 because the author decided to build tension by stalling the relationship rather than throw real obstacles to overcome, my pet peeve.

Overall arc has finally started to unfold

The first few books in the series were slow to develop. Things happened, but the plot was kinda hard to find. Finally, things have progressed enough to get a grip on the overall series plot and the book plot has gotten better. The protagonist makes mistakes and that drives the story. I'm giving this book 4 stars.

My biggest gripe was the 'twist' at the climax. I don't mind the twist itself. It just wasn't telegraphed in any way, making it seem contrived.

I love the duality of the story which leaves the reader questioning everything.

The dark king is either a menace from the past or the savior of the present. Or is he? Every time we get a handle on what's going on, the author hints at the opposite conclusion. Can't wait for the finish.

The Housewitch series is a fun read.

The story is fun and there are some genuine moments in the story where the dialog makes you laugh out loud. I enjoyed it.

That said, the romantic tension is built in the most annoying way possible. Kat is also a bit of a Peggy Sue when it comes to swordplay.

A few good moments but the ending was more or less missing

The series shines for the quips, banter, and one-liners. But all the previous books at least had a book plot as well as fitting into the series plot. This installment has no book plot to speak of. There was no satisfying conclusion. It was more like part 1 of a two part book.

A couple more chapters could have brought the book to a satisfying conclusion while setting up the next book. Instead it just ended. Meh.
