Historia
The Wisdom of the Desert was one of Thomas Merton's favorites among his own books, surely because he had hoped to spend his last years as a hermit. The personal tones of the translations and the blend of reverence and humor so characteristic of him show how deeply Merton identified with the legendary authors of these sayings and parables, the fourth-century Christian fathers who sought solitude and contemplation in the deserts of the Near East.

Better to read it yourself
Revisado: 02-07-23
This seems like it must be very profound—the west’s answer to the Blue Cliff Record—but it is read at warp speed, with each saying numbered and quickly recited like a grocery list. You get no chance to absorb any of it and the effect is the opposite of what Merton intended.

Profound
Revisado: 02-06-23
I’m pretty sure this is an abridged version of the play, but what it left out was not essential to this gut wrenching, tragic, poetic, darkly beautiful masterpiece. The reviews that don’t like it miss the point—this play is about denial, addiction, and dysfunction, three things that hit every family. This play is something every American should experience.

Historia
In The Mist-Filled Path, Frank MacEowen shows how embracing the indigenous wisdom of Scotland and Ireland can lead to healing and transcendence. Using his own travels and teachings along with Celtic stories and myths, he explores ancient traditions, ecopsychology, the ancient mother, altars and hearths, "Oran Mor" (the Great Song), contemplation, and mysticism. The book tells how to draw on ancestral roots to find a personal spirituality that also works for the greater good.

Lots of interesting sections
Revisado: 01-24-23
This book is certainly worth looking into if you are curious about Celtic spirituality. Some have commented that the narrator is not great. It should be noted that he is Irish, not Scottish as some have said. To me he sounds like an Irish Martin Luther, King Jr., which I enjoyed.

Historia
Herman Melville’s tale of corporate discontent, Bartleby, the Scrivener, tells the story of a quiet, hardworking legal copyist who works in an office in the Wall Street area of New York City. The business where he works handles the official financial paperwork of wealthy men. One day, Bartleby’s employer requests he proofread one of the documents he has copied. Bartleby declines the assignment with the inscrutable “I would prefer not,” the first of what will become many refusals.

Worth a listen
Revisado: 01-11-23
This provides some pretty good insights into Druidry and the Celtic way of spirituality generally. It can get a little zany, but not in a dogmatic way (and anyway, which tradition doesn’t have its zaniness?) One annoying thing is twice he singles out vegetarians for scorn for our supposed dogmatism, and he kind of downplays the profound ecological benefits of not eating animals. Some jerky vegetarians must have been pretty rude to the author. Too bad. Overall I came away with some good stuff.

Historia
From one of the most prominent voices on the American left, a galvanizing argument for why we need socialism in the US today. Bhaskar Sunkara explores socialism's history since the mid-1800s and presents a realistic vision for its future. Sunkara shows that socialism, though often seen primarily as an economic system, in fact offers the means to fight all forms of oppression, including racism and sexism. The ultimate goal is not Soviet-style planning, but to win rights to health care, education, and housing and to create new democratic institutions in workplaces and communities.

Not a manifesto
Revisado: 02-28-20
This is more a history of insider socialist politics. It also seems to completely conflate socialism with Marxism, which I don’t find particularly helpful these days.
