It's a wonderful mystery that kept me guessing--and believe me, I'm going to be looking for Robert Glenister as narrator as I search for new books. What range this man has! I recommend this one!

You must hear Anna Massey read this classic!
Revisado: 03-11-13
Would you listen to Rebecca again? Why?
I will go back to listen to this one again and again--du Maurier's suspenseful thriller has held my attention for years. Listening to Anna Massey read this is pure delight. She starred as Mrs. Danvers once on television and lent all the Massey mystique to the character, and now she's done a masterful reading. If you like du Maurier, listen to this one!

Historia
Graham Greene’s evocative analysis of the love of self, the love of another, and the love of God is an English classic that has been translated for the stage, the screen, and even the opera house. Academy Award-winning actor Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, A Single Man) turns in an authentic and stirring performance for this distinguished audio release.

This one is such a downer
Revisado: 02-19-13
Any additional comments?
First, I could listen to Colin Firth read anything. Second, the book is by Graham Greene, a well-noted author--who must have had the most unfortunate experience in life! We've all had love affairs that have gone wrong, but this protagonist is the most negative, bitterest individual I've ever heard. I couldn't help wondering why anyone would get involved with him-- the book does offer several insights, I think, to a common human experience, and is worth listening to, but be prepared for the negativity!

Historia
He's a self-described beach bum who won his houseboat in a card game. He's also a knight errant who's wary of credit cards, retirement benefits, political parties, mortgages, and television. He only works when his cash runs out, and his rule is simple: he'll help you find whatever was taken from you, as long as he can keep half.

Well, it's a Travis McGee novel--

Any additional comments?
I hadn't read a Travis McGee book in years. I remembered that I liked the Florida and shoreline ambience. His foes are always supervillains and die spectacularly badly. Unfortunately, this one had a truly terrible victim--one I found little sympathy for. Anyway, the ambience is there, and T. McGee is still the hard-boiled softy! I thought that the book was read well and it's worth a listen when you want sheer entertainment--that's why you buy a Travis McGee! Warning: if you read it at the beach you'll keep glancing over your shoulder. . .

Historia
Making a living reproducing famous artworks for a popular online retailer and desperate to improve her situation, Claire is lured into a Faustian bargain with Aiden Markel, a powerful gallery owner. She agrees to forge a painting - a Degas masterpiece stolen from the Gardner Museum - in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But when that very same long-missing Degas painting is delivered to Claire's studio, she begins to suspect that it may itself be a forgery. Her desperate search for the truth leads Claire into a labyrinth of deceit where secrets hidden since the late 19th century may be the only evidence that can now save her life.

Engrossing, especially for artists--and mysterious
Revisado: 01-07-13
Would you consider the audio edition of The Art Forger to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version, but it was recommended to me by someone who did--and who happens to be a fine artist who uses many media, but who paints primarily in oils these days. As a retired commercial artist, I'm at least familiar with all the processes used except using old canvases and attempting to fool the experts!
What did you like best about this story?
It has twists, turns, and surprises--and solid information about faithful copies which could be forgeries. The whole process was fascinating.
What about Xe Sands’s performance did you like?
It was a good, even performance with no confusion about whose voice we were hearing--very pleasant and easy to listen to.
If you could take any character from The Art Forger out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Several--maybe all
Any additional comments?
The technical explanations about forgeries were interesting to me and to my fine artist friend, but I think that the author may have gone on a bit long for the average reader.
