Historia
Julia Worthing is a mechanic, working in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. It’s 1984, and Britain (now called Airstrip One) has long been absorbed into the larger trans-Atlantic nation of Oceania. Oceania has been at war for as long as anyone can remember, and is ruled by an ultra-totalitarian Party, whose leader is a quasi-mythical figure called Big Brother. In short, everything about this world is as it is in Orwell’s 1984.

Interesting but unenjoyable
Revisado: 01-29-25
Completely undermines the themes of Orwell’s original, and contains constant mention of bodily mutilation/horror. Great concept but not executed to my tastes.

Historia
In Swimming to Freedom, Kent Wong captures his childhood amidst revolutionary times, where boyish adventures and school days mixed with dire poverty and political persecution. Mao’s Hundred Flower Campaign had ensnared Kent’s father. A decade later, the Cultural Revolution closed schools, plunged the country into chaos, and scattered Kent and his sisters to disparate villages, where they struggled to eke out a bare existence.

A beautiful, heartbreaking, and hopeful true story
Revisado: 01-01-25
Wow! I picked this up to expand my understanding of another country’s history. I didn’t expect to find myself crying at multiple points, cheering for the author, or so grateful to be born into a free country. This memoir follows one man’s life in and escape from Maoist Canton, and all the people he loved and lost along the way. The writing was moving and the narration was great! The story was harrowing at times and not for the faint of heart, but I recommend it to anyone interested in a primary source about an area of history that most people rarely get to glimpse.

Historia
Following the events in Network Effect, the Barish-Estranza corporation has sent rescue ships to a newly colonized planet in peril, as well as additional SecUnits. But if there's an ethical corporation out there, Murderbot has yet to find it, and if Barish-Estranza can't have the planet, they're sure as hell not leaving without something. If that something just happens to be an entire colony of humans, well, a free workforce is a decent runner-up prize. But there's something wrong with Murderbot; it isn't running within normal operational parameters.

Great installment!
Revisado: 06-24-24
This is a fantastic installment in the Murderbot series. It showcased Murderbot at its most “human” yet and hinted at other great things to come in the series. Note that it does immediately follow Network Effect, so it may be worth rereading that one first if it’s been a while.

Dark horse!
Revisado: 01-21-23
The last time I read Mansfield Park, I was in college and wasn’t interested in Fanny’s constant anxieties. A decade later, I’m doing a chronological re-read of her works. Although it is slow to start, I loved Mansfield Park this time! By the end of the story, I didn’t want to put it down! It is certainly not a Pride & Prejudice or Emma, but if you’re looking for a scathing Regency social commentary, you might be interested. Also, Frances Barber is an excellent narrator!

In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. Gorgeous
Revisado: 11-07-22
These books have been my favorites for years, but I have never loved them more than I did listening to these audiobooks. Andy Serkis is a phenomenal voice actor and his narration, voices, and sound effects are a treat. I recommend his audiobooks to anyone who even seems remotely interested in Tolkien. Sheer perfection!
