Narrator’s Whining/Crying Killed Me
Revisado: 01-30-25
The book is okay. The concept is clever, and there are some interesting things built into it world, but the main character is annoying and the narration triples down on the annoyingness by making every single worry or complaint into a tearful whine. I barely got through it, and I was planning to return the sequel without listening, but just noticed the sequels have a different narrator debating whether to give them a chance… but for book one, I suggest reading it instead of listening.

Historia
Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Still Timely - Everyone Should Read This Book
Revisado: 06-06-24
I’m sorry it took me so long to read this classic. While I didn’t particularly like Tim Robins’ narration, especially when he voiced women, it good enough to still enjoy this fantastic and important piece of literature. I kept my overall rating at 5 stars because the story is worth hearing/reading any way you can get it.

Amazing Life - Sometimes too Poetic
Revisado: 03-29-24
There is absolutely no doubt that Sanford D. Greenberg has lived (and continues to live) an extraordinary life. I enjoyed learning about, and being inspired by, his perseverance. His friendship with Art Garfunkel is a beautiful picture of what it means to lay oneself down for his friends. That being said, the telling gets rather poetic/abstract at times, and wasn’t my preference for storytelling style. The narration by Art Garfunkel was slow and almost hypnotic, I had to speed it up for my sanity. I am very glad I listened to it, because it’s a story worthy of being known and inspired by - but I doubt it will receive a repeat listen from me unless I put it on to lull me to sleep.

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

Absolutely Excellent
Revisado: 03-21-24
The story of Henrietta Lacks and her family is one that deserved be told, and Rebecca Skloot did an incredible job of telling it. The story of these immortal cells that have impacted medical research would have been interesting in its own, but hearing the enduring impact on her family drew me in deep in a way I didn’t expect.
The afterword was also powerful and thought provoking. In fact, with nearly a decade and a half now passed, I would love an updated afterword with more information on the Lacks family story and the current state of events in the debate about cell research, medical privacy, and commercial profit from biological samples.
This book was well done, and is not only a good read but an important one.

Interesting window into abuse & dysfunction.
Revisado: 03-13-24
The last couple chapters redeemed the book a little for me, but the first 2/3 made me uncomfortable with Priscilla painting a picture of Elvis’ manipulation, control, and abuse - then laughing it off with a weird stilted laugh. Penned originally in 1985, but her audio was recorded in 2022 - I would have appreciated an added commentary by the author on how she feels about this memoir in retrospect. The epilogue claims she was trying to write a more positive and balanced story about the man Elvis was. If this was positive, the other books must have been truly horrifying.

Historia
In a small Southern town where loyalty to family and to "your people" carries the weight of a sacred oath, defying those unspoken rules can be a deadly proposition. After 15 years of growing up in the Ozark hills with his widowed mother, high-school freshman Boady Sanden is beyond ready to move on. He dreams of glass towers and cityscapes, driven by his desire to be anywhere other than Jessup, Missouri. The new kid at St. Ignatius High School, if he isn't being pushed around, he is being completely ignored.

Eakins’ Best Yet
Revisado: 01-16-24
I almost skipped this one in the Joe Talbert universe series of books when I saw it was a story of Sandin as a kid, and I could not be more glad that I did not. The story was rich and excellent, and the vocal performance was my favorite of his books so far. The story was not what I was expecting from reading the quick summary/description, it was far more and better than I could have anticipated. This story can stand alone outside of the series, so if you haven’t read other Eskins novels from the Joe Talbert universe, you can absolutely enjoy this one out of order or simply on its own. I hope this is made into a film one day.

Beautiful Testimony
Revisado: 04-10-23
By the end of this book I felt like I had gained a friend in Nabeel, and wished I could hug him and thank him for sharing his story. To have the book read by the author, himself, made it ever more poignant. I highly recommend this audiobook. It is my favorite non-fiction audio title thus far.

Heartbreaking & Beautiful
Revisado: 03-06-20
This story, set during the second World War, is beautifully crafted Storytelling. My daughter (9) and I listened to it and both loved the story, as well as the performance. My daughter has since listened to it at least a dozen more times, but likely far more than that. The story teaches empathy, history, perseverance, love, and much more. One of the best books we've read it listened to in past year.

Fun, Imaginative, Magical
Revisado: 10-24-19
We loved the story. My daughter says it was the best book ever! I found the story a beautiful mix of emotions from laugh out loud funny to touchingly sad. The main character struggles with self-doubt in a way we found relatable, despite the fact that her talents were magical. All my daughter could ask afterwards was, "Is there another book?!?!?!!"
