great history

i love motorcycles. any adventure tale involving them sets me off. this one, read in a realistic british turn of the century accent is excellent. the riding, the breakdowns, the ingenuity involved in keeping the bike running for its 5000 mile ride was wonderful. you can follow much the same path today. and see the same locations. but the road will be a little better. my bike is a 250cc scooter with 20 horsepower. twice what the Henderson 4 had. he often made 10 mph.. i could follow at 60.
i loved the book.. the language takes getting used to.. but it is REAL.

Best Business book ever for the entrepeneur

Total

Revisado: 01-29-11

Michael Port has two basic principles that really resonate with me. If genius is defined as someone who shares your core values, Michael Port is a Genius! first, the Red Velvet Rope Policy or working ONLY with and for people who inspire and enrich you in your work. and second, Give until you think you have gone too far, then give MORE. Under promise and over deliver! Most important of all is my own mantra, "Do what you LOVE". If there was only one book for people wanting to start a business and work for themselves. THIS is the one! It is interesting, enjoyable and even fun. It will challenge you to make uncomfortable choices in your business. But those choices will make you and your business GROW! More to the point, you will be able to decide HOW you work best. FIRE those clients that make you crazy....or refer them to someone who is a better emotional fit! Network because you WANT TO DEAL WITH COOL PEOPLE! Not to feed off the herd! the underlying idea is to find something you LOVE to do and do THAT! You will be the best at that business that there can be!

A novel that has implications for TODAY!

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 01-29-11

I am a huge Fan of Lois McMaster Bujold. This EXCELLENT novel shows how the idea of Human Cloning might be treated from a social and legal standpoint. When is a person NOT a person? Is an artificially designed and genetically altered living artifact really a "person"? Or are they "property"? If they are, what "rights" do they have if any? when is slavery NOT slavery? Who owns a person that has been designed and manufactured?

Then what happens to these "manufactured human artifacts" when technology bypasses them and makes them OBSOLETE? what then? Who will maintain the very expensive habitat that they require for survival when it becomes no longer financially feasible ? And most importantly, are PEOPLE, even manufactured ones, more important than money? what is the obligation of the corporation toward their "artifacts"? Dispose of them? Sterilize them and place them in institutions downside, where they will live short and painful lives as cripples? and what happens when these "artifacts" begin to form emotional bonds in defiance of the designers plans?

I continue to be fascinated by Lois Bujold's examination of social implications of a universe where people can be "gene cleaned", or redesigned, or even their sex changed, at will! Is a Woman who becomes a Man still a woman? (Civil Campaign) or can She/he take the place of a man? Is an 8 ft tall, female "super Soldier" with fangs, still a woman? or a thing? Is a planet full of MEN only who fear women as terrors beyond imagining who will control your mind with a glance from her evil eye...still PEOPLE. Or some sort of perverse wart on the universe that is best shoved aside?

BEST of all, it is FASCINATING reading! (and listening!) from a very good story teller! Wow COOL, GOOD BOOK. I have read it and listened to it SEVERAL times!

EXCELLENT Book

Revisado: 12-30-10

This is one of TWO books of Lois Bujold that I think are her very best work. The other being "Falling Free". (note that I really enjoy all of her books) I noted that one reviewer objected to the phrase "strange perversion" or something which pertained to the All Male Colony of Athos. this is like objecting to and wishing to eliminate the n-word from the works of Mark Twain in the theory that it is not politically correct. and like Twain, Ms. Bujold gives her characters life and meaning BEYOND the stereotypical. Making such stereotypes nonsensical. Ethan is a sympathetic character who is trying to help his home cope with serious problems. To do this, he travels into the unimaginable and terrifying Galaxy where not only is he a stranger in a strange land, but he has to deal with those difficult and dangerous FEMALES! Of whom he is terrified because of the militant evangelical fervor with which his home world denounces them as creatures with unimaginable powers and hidden abilities to destroy a man! they may be right! I would Be FASCINATED to hear the back story about Athos! Why are they so repulsed by Women? What happened to their founders to cause them to create a planet where women are forbidden? And how is this so very different from the world of Barrayar and it's nearly pathological anti Female military? And how much of our OWN prejudices does this reveal!

I want BACK STORY! I want MORE INFORMATION DAMMIT!

I really love this book. It is fascinating and fun. Bujold at her very best. Only Falling Free may be better!

Cyroburn, a good read!

I will say from the first that I am a big fan of Lois McMaster Bujold and particularly of her Miles Verkosigan series. But this one is very well done. enough action, lots of Miles at his "best" as an Imperial Auditor, and plenty of good story. It injects a bit of "serious" at the end that is heart wrenching in a way that no other series can approach. the most dreaded words Miles could ever hear.

"Count Vorkosigan, Sir!"

thank you Lois! Please continue this story! it really is wonderful!

I am prejudiced. I love Terry Pratchet's work. and I really like GOOD Juvenile fiction. this is a really great story about a witch to be and her training. A continuation of "The Wee Free Men" Tiffany is now 11 and working for another witch to learn the ways of "Haggling!" Fun, suprises and of course adventures with the Nac Mac Feegles! More more!!!

Going Postal is a wonderful fantasy!

I love Pratchets books anyway, and Going Postal is a wonderful story! Follow a very GOOD con man who is forcefully reformed and pushed into reviving a failed postal service by Lord Vetinari! (the Tyrant!) Steven Briggs is a wonderful storyteller and does a lot of amazingly different voices. I enjoyed every minute of the book!
