In KL, Wachsmann fills this glaring gap in our understanding. He not only synthesizes a new generation of scholarly work, much of it untranslated and unknown outside of Germany, but also presents startling revelations, based on many years of archival research, about the functioning and scope of the camp system.

An in-depth and comprehensive analysis of the concentration camp system. Maybe not an entry level read , however an essential and critical book especially as so many continue to deny the holocaust!

Historia
Although he took command of the Army of the Potomac only three days before the first shots were fired at Gettysburg, Union general George G. Meade guided his forces to victory in the Civil War's most pivotal battle. Commentators often dismiss Meade when discussing the great leaders of the Civil War. But in this long-anticipated book, Kent Masterson Brown draws on an expansive archive to reappraise Meade's leadership during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Great book, not so great narration
Revisado: 08-28-22
This is a must read for any student of Gettysburg or the civil war in general! It definitely fills in a gap by taking a much needed and objective look at Meade and his generalship both during the battle and the campaign in general. While the narrator had a very good tone and pace his pronunciation of names was at times quite bad!

Historia
In just four weeks in the summer of 1941 the German Wehrmacht wrought unprecedented destruction on four Soviet armies, conquering central Ukraine and killing or capturing three quarters of a million men. This was the Battle of Kiev - one of the largest and most decisive battles of World War II and, for Hitler and Stalin, a battle of crucial importance. For the first time, David Stahel charts the battle's dramatic course and aftermath.

A great story but poor narration
Revisado: 10-11-21
While this book sheds light on a subject not widely studied in the west the narrator does take away from it some. How has a good voice and tone, however his pronunciation of names goes in and out. In one sentence he will pronounce General Jodl correctly and in the next butcher it along with terms like adjutant. Again, a great book, but a narrator more familiar with the subject matter would have helped immensely!!

Historia
The former Confederate states have continually mythologized the South's defeat to the North, depicting the Civil War as unnecessary, or as a fight over states' Constitutional rights, or as a David v. Goliath struggle in which the North waged "total war" over an underdog South. In The Myth of the Lost Cause, historian Edward Bonekemper deconstructs this multi-faceted myth, revealing the truth about the war that nearly tore the nation apart 150 years ago.

A great book with a bad narrator
Revisado: 08-17-21
Understanding the Myth of the Lost cause is equally important to a complete study of the civil war as studying the battles themselves!! Mr. Bonekemper does an amazing job debunking that great myth that has clouded the way the confederacy has been viewed for so long!!
Sadly, while I enjoyed C.J. McAllisters tone and speed, it was clear that he was not in anyway familiar with the Civil War as a subject. His mispronunciations of peoples names and places were anywhere from bad to atrocious.

Historia
Many consider the Battle of Midway to have turned the tide of the Pacific War. It is without question one of the most famous battles in history. Now, for the first time since Gordon W. Prange's best-selling Miracle at Midway, Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully offer a new interpretation of this great naval engagement. Shattered Sword makes extensive use of Japanese primary sources. It also corrects the many errors of Mitsuo Fuchida's Midway: The Battle That Doomed Japan It thus forces a major, potentially controversial reevaluation of the great battle.

A must read for students of Midway
Revisado: 06-05-21
Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully have brought a new and exciting take on the pivotal battle of Midway, especially with their emphasis on the Japanese side of the story. This is an absolute must read for any student of the battle. I would however agree with a previous review in that I would not recommend this as your first book on the battle of Midway. I would highly recommend Craig Symonds excellent work “The Battle of Midway” or Gordon Pranges “Miracle at Midway” first, followed by this

Generations have been told that Aaron Burr was a betrayer: of Alexander Hamilton, of his country, of those who had nobler ideas. But that version has been shaped by historians and writers from the 18th century on who were blinded by tabloid reports and propaganda created by Burr's political enemies during his lifetime. It is time to discover the real Aaron Burr.

Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Few events have captivated students of American history like the Civil War. Its most striking personalities seem somehow outsized, magnified beyond the ability of books or even legend to contain them. And few among those personalities have ever held our attention like General Robert Edward Lee.With his Army of Northern Virginia, Lee came to embody the cause of the Confederacy itself

For seven decades, our understanding of World War II has been shaped by a standard narrative built on conventional wisdom, propaganda, the dramatic but narrow experiences of soldiers on the ground, and an early generation of historians. For his new history, James Holland has spent over 12 years unearthing new research, recording original testimony, and visiting battlefields and archives that have never before been so accessible.

James Holland sheds new light on a subject that many may believe has been covered to the point of exhaustion!! From his re-examination of the myth of Wehrmacht mechanization and “blitzkrieg” to his in depth look at the nuts and bolts operational level of the war.
Paul Boehmer does a magnificent job narrating! Right down to spot on pronunciations of names and technical terminology along with various accents that, along with tone help keep a 28hr book alive and interesting!
Looking forward to volumes 2 and 3 of this series!!

Historia
On June 6, 1944, the greatest armada in history stood off Normandy and the largest amphibious invasion ever began as 107,000 men aboard 6,000 ships pressed toward the coast. Among them were 14,500 Canadians, who were to land on a five-mile-long stretch of rocky ledges fronted by a dangerously exposed beach. Drawing on personal diaries as well as military records, Juno Beach: Canada's D-Day Victory, June 6, 1944 dramatically depicts Canada's pivotal contribution to the critical Allied battle of World War II.

Unfortunate narration
Revisado: 06-09-19
Overall this book tells the very critical and often overlooked Canadian landing on June 6,1944, sadly however despite having good tone the narrator clearly had no familiarity with many of the terms, names associated with these events and butchered most of them. Had that not been the case this would have made this a much better listen
