Historia
In this glorious celebration of the night, New York Times bestselling nature writer Leigh Ann Henion invites us to leave our well-lit homes, step outside, and embrace the dark as a profoundly beautiful part of the world we inhabit. Because no matter where we live, we are surrounded by animals that rise with the moon, and blooms that reveal themselves as light fades. Henion explores her home region of Appalachia, where she attends a synchronous firefly event in Tennessee, a bat outing in Alabama, and a moth festival in Ohio.

not much science
Revisado: 10-11-24
I expected this to be more informative, more science, Unfortunately, it was more anecdotal and woo-woo than I preferred, so I gave up and returned it... To bad, cause it's an important and interesting topic.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Great story
Revisado: 10-05-24
I really loved how the author seamlessly worked in bigger societal issues such as misogyny, the oversized role of religion, the strength of women, and the things that make relationships, with lovers, friends, or children, good ones-honesty, respect, communication, listening to one another. I loved this book!

Historia
In the heart of the South Pacific lies Point Nemo, the most desolate and remote place on Earth. At its core is a dead zone, devoid of life, where government agencies crash their obsolete satellites and space stations, confident they won't harm a soul. When the International Space Station suffers a catastrophic failure and plummets through the atmosphere, it's here that Mission Specialist Julie Rohr, an astrobiologist studying living space dust called xylem, finds herself marooned. Julie's only hope for rescue lies in the hands of her estranged father, Dr. Finn Maddern, a renowned mycologist.

Action, and fighting lots of fighting
Revisado: 05-30-24
Not so much real Science Fiction as an action flick. Basically it was just an eight hour long fight scene. Lame.

A most memorable read
Revisado: 12-08-23
This was such a fun, audible book. I knew I wanted to get it on audible so I could listen to Patrick Stewart’s beautiful voice. his story is very compelling. It was wonderful to hear about his childhood and how hard work and a passion for the theater took him to Heights he never dreamed possible. I see this as an inspiration for many inspiring actors, as well as others, who have many obstacles in their way to become the person they envision for themselves. Thank you so much for the amazing story!

Historia
In our unique genomes, every one of us carries the story of our species - births, deaths, disease, war, famine, migration, and a lot of sex. But those stories have always been locked away - until now. Who are our ancestors? Where did they come from? Geneticists have suddenly become historians, and the hard evidence in our DNA has completely upended what we thought we knew about ourselves. Acclaimed science writer Adam Rutherford explains exactly how genomics is completely rewriting the human story - from 100,000 years ago to the present.

A Top-Notch Work
Revisado: 10-23-23
This was a most excellent book. I am well versed in evolutionary science, yet have always been a bit scared of genetics. This was perfect. I enjoyed it immensely. The author actually made an excellent presenter: Rutherford could make a second career as a book reader for Audible! Smooth voice, nice British accent, perfect timing and delivery. But content is, of course, the real crux of the matter and, in that, Rutherford’s work excelled. I found this book to be highly accessible, engaging, and informative all the way, but also entertaining, and not overly academic or technical. I recommend this book unequivocally to anyone interested in genetic science, which we should all be in this day and age. Fascinating, not dry. I am not generally so easy to please. Rarely pen a review. But this one was perfect.

Historia
A provocative and positive response to Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and other New Atheists, Good Without God makes a bold claim for what nonbelievers do share and believe. Epstein's Good Without God provides a constructive, challenging response to these manifestos by getting to the heart of Humanism and its positive belief in tolerance, community, morality, and good without having to rely on the guidance of a higher being.

Meh...
Revisado: 09-23-23
I have read extensively, in both religious and atheist traditions. This did nothing for me. Naïve, over simplistic. I also think that the author was too enamored of the "can't we all just get along" mindset, with the result that the work, while promising to be of a secular or atheist nature, had significant apologetic overtones.

Teenage girls squabbling
Revisado: 08-08-23
Essentially it was like young teenage girls squabbling and posturing for chapter after chapter. I kept waiting for it to go somewhere, but...
As a feminist, I was particularly offended. What a shallow depiction of women. I made it about 40 chapters in and could not finish. I don't know any grown women who are that petty, self obsessed, and shallow. No real plot to speak of.

In What It Means to Be Moral: Why Religion Is Not Necessary for Living an Ethical Life, Phil Zuckerman argues that morality does not come from God. Rather, it comes from us: our brains, our evolutionary past, our ongoing cultural development, our social experiences, and our ability to reason, reflect, and be sensitive to the suffering of others.

A genuine 'must-read' for theist and atheist alike
Revisado: 08-30-22
This is a truly brilliant work. It is encouraging, enlightening, well-informed, and highly informative. Yet it is also very readable and easily accessible to the lay reader. I highly recommend 'What it Means To Be Moral' for any and all persons interested in morality, justice, ethics, or the implications of Darwin and the evolutionary sciences for our understanding of human nature. I think it should be on the reading list of every atheist, and particularly anyone who considers themselves an agnostic. It should be required reading for the recently burgeoning populace of 'nones'. But perhaps most importantly, it should be read by the worlds copious devout, or at least those amongst them who are open-minded enough to consider justice, morality, and human good as the products of evolution, as entirely natural phenomenon, and no longer as the products of divine fiat or supernatural agency. An essential contribution to the secular canon, this important work should be in the library of everyone and anyone who is interested in ethics, morality, good and evil, or our increasingly naturalistic understanding of human nature.

An innocent man is about to be executed. Only a guilty man can save him. Travis Boyette is such a man. In 1998, in the small East Texas city of Sloan, he abducted, raped, and strangled a popular high-school cheerleader. He buried her body so that it would never be found, then watched in amazement as police and prosecutors arrested and convicted Donté Drumm, a local football star, and marched him off to death row.
