Historia
As Indigenous scientist and author of Braiding Sweetgrass Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most? Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry’s relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity.

a beautiful drop of peace and possibility
Revisado: 12-25-24
Robin Wall Kimerer can live in my head rent free any time. She's a voice of conscience and compassion, a fresh perspective and timeless human wisdom. Just listen to the book. Even better, listen to it while you're gardening or baking, or packing up some extra produce or cookies for the neighbors.

Historia
Recruited into the fundamentalist Quiverfull movement as a young wife, Tia Levings learned that being a good Christian meant following a list of additional life principles—a series of secret, special rules to obey. Being a godly and submissive wife in Christian Patriarchy included strict discipline, isolation, and an alternative lifestyle that appeared wholesome to outsiders. Women were to be silent, “keepers of the home.” A Well-Trained Wife is an unforgettable memoir about a woman's race to save herself and her family and details the ways that extreme views can manifest in a marriage.

Necessary read
Revisado: 11-01-24
This isn't some crazy, out there culture. It's our culture, the shadow of patriarchy clawing at the seams of our society. Tia is reporting from the front lines, and while this is a hard read because she survived so much, it's a deeply poignant read because she shows a way to survive so much.

This is The TRUTH writ large and maybe it's "depressing" but only because our society has been ignoring the facts and we have been gaslit into believing diets work. I'll be recommending this book to everyone who can handle some capital T Truth.

Historia
Blending intimate stories with the trenchant analysis that has become her signature, Manne shows why fatphobia has become a vital social justice issue. Over the last several decades, implicit bias has waned in every category, from race to sexual orientation, except one: body size. Manne examines how anti-fatness operates—how it leads us to make devastating assumptions about a person’s attractiveness, fortitude, and intellect, and how it intersects with other systems of oppression.

Historia
Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate.

Historia
In this newly revised and expanded edition of The Emotion Code, renowned holistic physician and lecturer Dr. Bradley Nelson skillfully lays bare the inner workings of the subconscious mind. He reveals how emotionally charged events from your past can still be haunting you in the form of "trapped emotions"—emotional energies that literally inhabit your body. These trapped emotions can fester in your life and body, creating pain, malfunction, and eventual disease.

If you want storytime for 'why my system works' with next to zero useful information (it's buried in part 3 - skip ahead) this is for you. But I wanted an actionable instructive book on how to release stuck emotions, not a smattering of old suss methods of 'divining' - muscle testing etc. Save your money for a good shaman, skip the book.

Historia
Sasha Pierce hasn’t had a single dream since she was a child...until she accepts a substitute teaching position in the charmingly witchy village of Old Middleton. Her first dream in twenty-five years ought to be enchanting, but her wonder quickly turns to shock when she realizes that it’s not a dream at all, but an entirely different sort of magic. Catapulted through an ancient portal into the fairytale kingdom of Between, Sasha’s astonishment is swiftly upgraded to panic when she accidentally performs a supposedly impossible feat and is declared the True Queen of Between.

perfect narrators for my favorite characters
Revisado: 03-07-23
I read Between when it first came out and loved it - one of the most purely enjoyable reads of my life (and I read a lot). The main character Sasha is fun, smart, and reacts to bizarre events realistically (at least, like I would) and is not an idiot (my pet peeve in heroines). And the main male character also has reasonable reactions and motives and doesn't go around waving RED FLAGS that would send any reasonable romantic partner running (my pet peeve in love interests). Maybe that's why I find Between purely enjoyable - it doesn't trigger any of the usual annoyances, and instead, we get drunk unicorns, nefarious goats, and a small army of Granny Weatherwax-inspired elders. Ok, about the narration: There are two narrators (one for the Sasha sections, one for King Tight Pants) and both nailed it. Not an easy feat when these characters have been living in my head for a couple of years (we'll, pandemic years - could be longer, could be shorter, time is a construct). Give yourself the gift of pure joy and unsupervised livestock making bad life choices. Will you be asking yourself wtf during this novel? Yes. But in the sense of Where The Fudge Has This Book Been My Entire Life?

Historia
For 150 years, high above rocky Scottish cliffs, Caldonbrae Hall has sat untouched, a beacon of excellence in an old ancestral castle. A boarding school for girls, it promises that the young women lucky enough to be admitted will emerge “resilient and ready to serve society.” Into its illustrious midst steps Rose Christie: a 26-year-old Classics teacher, Caldonbrae’s new head of the department, and the first hire for the school in over a decade.

mutton headed heroine
Revisado: 06-18-21
Good story, good twist, but the main character is useless. She shows no growth and is as shocked by everything at the end as she is on the beginning (at some point, when weird things continue to happen, you've got to get a bit jaded). She lacks agency and stays in perpetual victim mode. At least Medusa went down fighting.
