Thoroughly Enjoyed

I listen to audiobooks mostly on my commute to and from work. I'm an old man and father, but I enjoy children's literature because I deal with enough "real life" adult nonsense at work that I like wholesome stories on occasion. Anyway, to the point. This story makes me smile for a little while. I'm a well read old guy with many years of military and law enforcement, And this made me feel good. Just like JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis and JK Rowling made me smile when reading their work. And the author is narrating his own work to boot. Amazing performance. I look forward to delving into the next book.

Where is the line between fiction and nonfiction? The plot is plausible and frighteningly accurate to current events. It is painfully obvious that the ruling political class (of either party) does NOT have our best interests in mind.

I read this the first time in High School, and read it again when I got out of the Army in the 90s... Now I've revisited it as an audiobook some 30 years later. Still as good as I remembered. Next to various Tolkien books, this novel has stuck with me the most over the years and recommend it to everyone interested in mythology. I highly recommend this still. I'm guessing, but I wouldn't be surprised if Brandon Mull was influenced by this work for his Fablehaven series. This piece is definitely for adults however.
The performance was excellent for the audiobook.

Juvenile? Absolutely! Racist & Intolerant? NO!

I've read numerous reviews and believe a huge disservice has been done to this series of short stories arranged into a TV series style of anthology. One bonehead even claims rednecks wouldn't sport a ponytail. Well I've seen plenty of rednecks and bikers who wear ponytails, as well as mullets...
Another jackass, with an over inflated sense of self worth, claimed this is racist and intolerate. Well, the hero's best friend and partner is a gay black man who the hero helped against bullies when they were kids. Not really the actions of a racist and intolerant protagonist.
Is this the best writing I've ever digested? Absolutely not! But it wasn't trying to be. It is funny though, in a very juvenile way albeit. It's not quite the caliber of Larry Correia's MHI books, but it is entertaining.
I like Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, and Space Above and Beyond and I'm sure there are alot of Science Fiction fans out there that are the same way. So if you like the Supernatural, X-Files, Dresden and Monster Hunter International series then you might enjoy this... It's like MHI meets the TV show Mountain Monsters....
As far as the repetition goes, imagine this anthology of short stories appearing in serial fashion in a magazine. That might explain the repetitive self description of being 6 foot 5 and 350 lbs, drinking Bud out of a pitcher at a titty bar.

I've read many reviews complaining about the ending of this story. I find it was fulfilling. Not all endings are happy ones. The blood debt was fulfilled though, and they were reunited.
