Secrets of a Charmed Life was endearing and heartbreaking story of sisters separated during the London Blitz during WWII, but filled with hope and redemption. It's now at the top of my favorite Susan Meissner books. I didn't want it to end. Glad I read it.

A well written story from the women's point of view of the hardships and horrors of war during the Japanese invasion of the Philippines during WWII. Often the women's stories in wartime of courage, strength and heroism are overlooked. This focused on three women whose friendship was forged during war and the sisterhood that stood the test of time is a reminder that real friendship and love are enduring.

Sam Carlson is a projectionist in small-town Minnesota, where fantasies unspool in glorious black and white—for him and for his sweetheart, college-bound math whiz Sarah Haber. When the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, Sam is sent to the Philippines and captured as a POW. Brutalized but unbroken by the Bataan Death March and POW camps, Sam is one of eighteen hundred starved and weakened prisoners herded into the cargo hold of a barbaric hell ship called the Arisan Maru, his survival doubtful.

Heartbreaking
Revisado: 02-03-25
Dugoni does a good job telling the story of a fictional character that represents thousands of WWII POWs who were inhumanely held in Japanee hellships, and about a brilliant woman that represents the many who served as secret code breakers during the war. Heartbreaking to think so many suffered and died sometimes by our own troops for the greater good. I can't image being put in the position of knowing and making those calls. Authors notes at the end are a worthy read/listen.💔

Both Heartbreaking and Inspiring
Revisado: 12-14-24
This story is a testament to the strength of women despite harrowing circumstances. It reveals the impacts of how cultural norms, religion, war, and discrimation can harm millions and yet spur change through one life. Adversity can give birth to change when it's paired with the beautifully, strong heart of a woman.

It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girl’s pretty yellow dress can’t quite hide the ugly scar on her chest. Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he's restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.

Michael Connelly never disappoints. Narration was spot on. I love the Bosch and Ballard novels. I've read them all. it's like watching a movie in your head. I love how Connelly writes the strong female cops in his stories. Also, I love seeing Harry Bosch appear as support. You can always count on Harry to do whatever it takes. I totally enjoyed this one. Highly recommend.
