I'm one of the Metaverse Research Recruiters at Meta and I was the Leadership Recruiter for the Google Search Algorithm before this role. We have a lot of great interview training both at Meta and Google - but I've frequently been asked for books that distill that knowledge. Up to now, I've only been able to recommend Laszlo Bock's 'Work Rules' which published his work on hiring science at Google. It's an amazing book but tends to be too technical and long for most hiring managers.

I'm going to start recommending this book for a quicker read. Ryan did a great job summarizing the work we did at Meta and Google Recruiting. He talks about strategy but also goes into detail about novel tactics a manager can try. It's an easy-to-understand guide for good recruiting practices.

My therapist recommended I listen to this book after she was certain a toxic coworker is a sociopath. I initially doubted it as she wasn't like sociopaths I see on TV like Trump our Kelly Anne. However, the more subtle stories perfectly described the bizarre behavior directed at me. And the description of the shark eyes was dead on.

It was helpful in giving advice how to deal with someone and I'm better off at work having turned this person in rather than try to work with them. There is no winning over or changing a sociopath, you can only cut them out. The sooner we recognize that the better we are.

I'd like to think I'm not a boring person (say all boring people, i'm sure). I say that to reassure myself after I found this book, about the life of trees, to be impossible to stop listening to.

Not only was the voice narrator a treat, but the subject felt as though I stumbled onto an unknown world. Trees, as it turns out, have fairytale like secrets we are only recently discovering.

Two well earned stars for explaining the real danger of EMP. No added stars though for the (completely unrelated yet majority of the story) sweet dreams of women staying in their place, the benefits of absolute police state power over the US and explaining all bad things in the story as having started with a drunk ramming into something.

It's so bad that it would be funny if this wasn't how some people actually think.
