Book was pretty good, narration tough

So if you’ve listened to the previous book, you know this but the male narrator makes the female characters sound like the voice middle school boys use to mock girls for enjoying girly things. Forced and mocking of women. It’s distracting, and will probably just try to read the third.

Otherwise storyline is nothing memorable but enjoyable and am interested enough to wait for the third book.

Female narrator ruins main character

I think the story is fine for this genre. It wasn’t amazing but entertaining enough. However, the female narrator continues to make the female voice always sound under duress. This makes me imagine the heroine as weaker and struggling more than I think I would if I read it instead. The best way I can describe it is it puts a mental image in my head like she’s struggling to stay afloat after her ship capsized and talking her way through it with a friend. Neck outstretched and struggling through treading water but trying to make small talk waiting for help to arrive.

I would say the book is worth reading, but not worth listening to.

Book and characters great, miscommunication trope not so much

I loved the characters, the banter, the narration. Like so so much of this book. But it leans HEAVILY into the miscommunication trope and it’s almost painful to read sometimes. ✨SPOILER✨ Like she is not married and never has been but wears a wedding ring every day?? This never comes up with someone who has 100 mutual friends of hers and has loved her for years?? Like I can understand having some of this trope but it is just pushed for so long and so hard it was almost painful at times. Still enjoyed the book and the author but parts were truly a struggle (see: outside picnic lunch scene 🙄).

Don’t enjoy the trope, but still enjoyed the book!

One of my least favorite and painful tropes is the “misunderstanding” trope, but I still managed to really enjoy this. The characters were endearing enough and story well written enough I could forgive them for the the painful misunderstandings.

Solid story, narration ruins main character

The story is a solid one and well told, but the narration makes the main character seem more whiny and weak than the actual writing suggests. If you can, I would recommend reading this over listening to it.

I will try to do this with as few spoilers as possible, but honestly it won’t matter because just don’t read it.

These characters and story had SO much potential but the author put zero energy into their story or characters. They go from three books worth and literal CENTURIES of bitterness and hate to boinking because Angel…DANCED?! No conversation. No explanation. No reasoning.

Reese is downright cruel and says basically nothing to Angel (who is supposed to be a centuries old battle tough warrior badass) through most of the book, and yet she apologizes to HIM for HER stubbornness? I literally felt all female empowerment (which is the essence of her character) flee my body in mortification.

And it honestly just got worse from there. You won’t miss much plot wise if you just skip it, and what you do miss could easily be summarized in like two sentences:

SPOILER IF YOU PLAN ON SKIPPING:
Angel gets pregnant, Mira is heavily pregnant by the end of the book, Alaistair dies, and Reece died and came back. There, you’re caught up.

I thought overall it was a good book, it didn’t have me on the edge of my seat but kept me entertained.

For the performance I thought it was good, just the way she said “Creon” as the main character was always said in such a way that it sounded like he was taking his last breath. Like, “she saw him sit down to eat cereal, but realized it was a brand he didn’t favor.” “CREON!!!!!!” Every time. So breathy. So dramatic. Besides that it was well done.

Solid plot line and characters, poorly developed romance

The plot has potential, as do the characters. But just know, I’ve read a lot of romance novels and this is overly graphic in language comparatively, to the point where it’s distracting and takes away from the plot. The romance is also fantastical in the hero shows little to no redeeming qualities, and despite the heroine being otherwise strong and independent, she still wants to let him do whatever he wants to her after about 24 hours of knowing one another. It really has potential if just a little more time had been taken in the romance development itself and the horribly graphic language. I’m sure listening to it made it worse, maybe better and less distracting from the plot if read instead.

The story and plot line are decent, I would be interested in finishing the series. But I honestly don’t know if I can do it with the narrator. It’s like she tries to make even the simple dialogue seem tension filled, which made me feel like the book was more dramatic and cheesy than I think it was in reality. She over emphasizes EVERYTHING and it made it INCREDIBLY challenging to listen to. Especially the male lead, I had him pegged as a huge dork and I realized it’s mainly because of how he’s narrated. Ugh.

Good book, but little romance

I thought this was an entertaining book that was overall well written. The heroine is likable, and the plot line interesting if not unique. I will say, there is little romance in this book if that’s what you’re looking for. Hints of it but not even a kiss. Still worth the listen, but would hardly categorize in any way as a “romance.”
