Historia
Driven by eyewitness accounts and combining urban history with a life-and-death drama and a technological detective story, Floodpath grippingly reanimates the reality behind LA noir fictions like the classic film Chinatown. In an era of climate change, increasing demand on water resources, and a neglected American infrastructure, the tragedy of the St. Francis Dam has never been more relevant.

Cairo, 1912: Though Fatma el-Sha’arawi is the youngest woman working for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities, she’s certainly not a rookie, especially after preventing the destruction of the universe last summer. So when someone murders a secret brotherhood dedicated to one of the most famous men in history, al-Jahiz, Agent Fatma is called onto the case.

Great characters, atmosphere, but plot predictable.
Revisado: 08-30-22
It’s a fun listen, but a predictable plot. Still vanishing into a world where Egyptian modernity includes djinn and magical machinery is a pleasure.

Sad Tail, for a Sad Puppy
Revisado: 09-03-21
Without any knowledge of Larry Corriea’s stand on diversity in science fiction—the author’s views were obvious. One and only one female character, the admin assistant, and a continuous mocking tone directed at whoever Corriea believes a liberal to be.
Was it entertaining, yes; like a Saturday morning cartoon.
The narrator read way too fast. Perhaps trying to finish the story before the listener turned it off and deleted it forever. Good thing this was a free book.

Good thing it was free and I needed something for.
Revisado: 09-10-19
Allegedly set in Paris, but none of the local details were used: The peculiarities of the French legal system, atmosphere of streets and cafes. Instead it it included all the cliches of an American crime procedural.
The narrator’s French, German, and New York accents were erratic.
Some great female characters, who had nothing to do but run and hide.
Annoyingly high body count, if you want Dan Brown, listen to Dan Brown.

Historia
Capturing a crucial moment in the history of exploration, the mid-19th century romance with the Arctic, Andrea Barrett focuses on a particular expedition and its accompanying scholar-naturalist, Erasmus Darwin Wells. Through his eyes, we meet the Narwhal's crew and its commander - obsessed with the search for an open polar sea - and encounter the far north culture of the Esquimaux. In counterpoint, we see the women left behind in Philadelphia, explorers only in imagination.

Riegert's performance, Encore. I purchased this book on the strength of Riegert's reading of The Yiddish Policeman's Union.
Erasmus Wells life as a shy naturalist comes to life in this telling.

A little, very little, engineering training makes it feel like you are building the bridge along side Roebling and his wife Emily.
