difficult book. narrator swallows the end of his sentences, emphasizes weird parts of others…sometimes even if i can understand what hes saying, i have no idea what it means. is saint really scout finch? mostly an unbelievable story, confusing, slightly surreal.
not my flavor.

"I was so miserable Jefferey felt sorry for me"
Why is she miserable? Another giant success became boring, poor Ina. She simply can't believe her little books sold out, her house/her designs/her ideas /her instincts her tastes were successful!
Moi? she posits falsely every other page, 'a little girl from Brooklyn buys a Paris apartment?'..she claims to have cried!! LOL.
-C'mon. Honestly her dreary cookbooks are so dated, full of other people's recipes full of meat, fat and salt. Her mantra like every other cook; freshest ingredients, prettily displayed. And her freind Dick Avedon was right, boring designs. So quotidian they have sold well.
Namedropping, false modesty, hyperbole: fabulous, delicious, perfect, blah blah blah.
I listen to this book and laugh out loud at her verbal masturbation.

I liked the story and the anecdotes. Clearly, griffin dunne is funny --but the man cannot read aloud, AND HE WROTE THE BOOK?!
HIs candence and timing and pauses are bonkers.

Self referencing the plot it ripped off, this book didnt add much of anything to the canon.
I tried to return but couldnt.
The narrator grated, her men's voices all sounded the same, and all sounded slurred and drunk. Nasal and whiny, she ruined an already mediocre read. Honestly, skip this and read the original Strangers on the Train, Patricia Highsmith.

Every woman had blond hair, every man had "piering blue eyes?! Lazy writing, Author king of TELL, dont show -- all exposition and no interiority makes a very bland book.

Eyeroll moments: "Mr Blue Eyes" "Sparkles, where's Sparkles?"

I bought this title on a whim because I loved Dracula so much. Never read the Anne Rice books. Right away the intelligent, elegant writing swept me away. The reader's beautiful pace and voice create the characters and build the world in this amazing place I wish I could live in.
Holland hands us history, pyschology, philosophy plus wit in a dark velvet compelling tale. I have very rarely loved a book so much lately. This is more than it appears on its face, more than a vampire story, though vampires are often enough. : )=

I didnt love tom Hanks reading this book. It was as if he didnt take the whole thing too seriously.
But the story is rich and complex and unique. Really liked the populating characters, including the most important one, the house itself. The writing made me feel things, Plus more stepmother stories please.

Flat. If this was a hard copy book I wouldnt finish it. Hard to care about it as I dont care about anyone in it. Lots of tell don't show, and then what is shown is not believable. Maybe valuable as a Lifetime movie or Hallmark.
Wonder what Oprah and the NYT reviewer saw in it.
And the narrator? Reads as if she is doing something else as she narrates, looking at her phone? She is supposed to be an actress, but its hard to believe. Weird emphasis and cadence.
All in all not worth a credit.

Everything I want from a novel and rarely find. Just about A perfect book. I often rewound the 30 seconds just to hear every word and abosrb it.

A beautifully written book on death -- real death, corporeal death and what happens to our bodies in death and after. A collision of commercialism, greed, science, humanity and love. One of the most profound and exciting books I have read in a while.

The author has an amazing talent of knowing what to say and what to let resonate, unsaid, into the white page. Her sentaces are gorgeous. I could listen to her read forever. I will await her next book.

Interested in this topic, read Jessica Mitford and Mary Roach on death.
