What can I do? How can I work towards a solution? How can I be a change agent? How can I be an ally? How can I effectively change my mindset to get to a place of total healing and racial reconciliation? These questions are often asked in response to tough discussions or events relating to race, racism, racial injustice, or systemic racism, both historical and current.

What is real love? How long does it last? Is marriage worth it? This short fiction examines these questions in the short hours before the wedding of Will and Darla is to take place. I thoroughly enjoyed this great listen.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Hard Sentences
Revisado: 12-26-20
This is a once in a lifetime encounter with... us. Face to face examining stories of people sentenced by our justice system gave me a chance to examine how I think, how I vote and what I put my energies into. I loved the true life stories and the pain-filled honest narrative that resoundly rings with determination and kindness.

Seeing The Person
Revisado: 02-07-20
The authors quiet voice initially reflects the educated tones of the brilliant teacher that the character is. This same quiet tone then begins to reflect the objective scientific mind standing apart from self evaluating events she begins to respond differently to. Then that same quiet voice reflects intense tension, anxiety, determination to remain as much a part of her Cambridge/Harvard wife-mother-grandmother role as possible. All in the face of a battle with and against Alzheimers. This brilliant book enabled me to redefine ‘quality of life’ arguments, to see what living inside ones own deteriorating brain might feel like, helped me better grasp how to be WITH someone with Alzheimers. I am certain every journey in this is different but the book voiced sone things caregivers and family and the medical profession might face. But although Alzheimers is tragic, this book wrote honestly the hope that lives in the same place. I rarely give 5 star ratings... a book has to change my mind on something. This one did.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Learning North
Revisado: 01-13-20
Not another crime story, although thats here. This book is the slow reveal of Alaskan natives and troopers and locals, in a way that lets the never bored listeners see the unspoken and smell the strength of a people group and region in all its complexity. The personal true stories of two men, both who worked on same film set, one turning criminal and one turning sleuth to understand, ended up causing me to pull into a quiet and astonished listening place long after the final chapter in the book had been read.

Worthy. Powerful. Listen. Read this book.
Revisado: 06-28-19
This is a shorter excerpt, apparently, of a larger work? Well, I think I will need to add to my reading list, but meanwhile, this 1 hour listen was pure fascination. I learned, never bored for a second, a bit more of our history, things I hope we can, as a nation, grasp and use to 'shift our positions'... some of us, anyway.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Helping Me Get It
Revisado: 01-01-19
This book objectively helped me redefine racism, helped me remove it from the ‘you are a bad person’ box and see it in myself more clearly than I had. I hope it’s thoughtful presentation of my culture enables me to take on a more humble learners position rather than defensively and arrogantly thinking I am not racist. Sobering, yet powerfully wonderful... like when someone gently tells us the truth: a gift. Just wow.
