Painful narrator

It's hard to believe we are at a point where someone who mispronounces SO MANY words could even be allowed to narrate a book for which people are charged money. The narrator has a wonderful speaking voice and good enunciation (for the words he pronounces correctly), but he creates a kind of sing-song effect the way he changes the pitch of his voice, raising i5 at the end of almost every sentence. I found this distracting.

I know little about the Netherlands, and the material in the book seems well researched, but it consists of fact after another with not enough context to paint a larger picture of how these facts fit into a larger view of history. What I mean is that I couldn't see the forest for the trees. And this, for me, means I won't retain a lot of it.

Some things were clear, but to understand the rest, I would have had to stop and look things up, because the author assumes that I know more than I do about history.

At least it's concise and only took a few hours to listen to.

I read this years ago. It changed my view of God, myself, other Christians, spiritual warfare, and success.

It's a profound book. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to love and serve God better.

Felt like I was drowning in dozens of mispronounced words, and that combined with the mysterious, overly dramatic tone and weird echos made it difficult to get through the book.

I also disliked that the author seems to consider that some of these writings contain information that could trump Scripture. He doesn't come right out and say that, but it is implied a number of times.

Much of these ancient writings are tedious and provide little information. But it was interesting to see what these oral traditions amounted to. 1 Enoch contained at least a little plausible material. Listening to this made me desire and reverence and increased my appreciation and thankfulness for the Scriptures and made me know the books of the Bible were canonized for a reason!

How did I make it this far in life without reading any of the serious works of Chesterton?!

I thoroughly enjoyed the intellectual exercise required to follow his arguments, and his brilliant wit and humor added spice to the dish!

We complaisant Western Christians need to hear the testimony of Hudson Taylor!

Very few books make me see the need of personal repentance, but this one did because I was able to measure myself against a higher standard, the standard of what it truly means to live a selfless life, one sold out to Jesus Christ!

May the Lord help me and us all to follow in his train!

Chuck Pierce is one of the wise who will shine in the Kingdom of our Father forever. His words require a person to discern them spiritually rather than just intellectually. So read this prayerfully.

It’s an amazing book for those able to receive it.

I was surprised at how much I learned about things I thought I knew, especially about St. Augustine’s effect on so much of medieval history.

The book was well-written, balanced, and made me think.

I enjoy Anthony Trollope, and since I recently went to Ireland, this one was especially interesting.

The narration has some background noise and seemed to not have been recorded all in the same place. Some of it sounded more hollow than other parts. But it was still okay. I could understand the narrator and it was fairly well fine. Not as good as the very best narrators though.

I didn’t think anyone would be able to pull such a novel off in such a realistic and delicate way. It’s inspiring to me as a Christian to know this side of Bonhoeffer’s story. I definitely recommend this along with Eric Metaxis’ Bonhoeffer book.

I did get a general overview of Irish history in a short amount of time which I truly appreciate.

However, the author needs to work on subject-verb agreement and verb tense.

The text was sometimes ambiguous (for example he referred to King Henry without telling us which one), and he jumped around without proper transitions which sometimes left me not knowing what he was talking about.

The narrator was okay but needs to learn how to pronounce a few common words like reputable.
