Historia
Criminologist Martin Knight lives a gilded life and is a thorn in the side of the police. But then his wife, Liz, goes missing. There is no good explanation and no sign of Martin.... To make things worse, Liz is the ex-girlfriend of DCI Craig Gillard who is drawn into the investigation. Is it just a missing person or something worse? And what relevance do the events around the shocking Girl F case, so taken up by Knight, have to do with the present? The truth is darker than you could ever have imagined.

This was an engaging book that scratched my itch for UK police procedurals. I hope someone turns it into a miniseries.

As Will digs into both crimes, it becomes clear that he must solve the original case in order to reach the truth

Engaging story and great narration
Revisado: 10-15-24
This is the only book in this series I’ve listing to so far, and now I want to listen to more. The book is long and occasionally arguably more detailed than necessary, but I enjoy that. I like the slow burn.

Historia
Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can't shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot. Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He's charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet. Then the brutal murder of a young woman—the latest in a string of deaths across the coast—confounds police. The primary suspect? A mystery man who dates his victims before he kills them.

Believable characters; well written
Revisado: 09-08-24
I listen to many thrillers and mysteries, and this book is much better written than most. The characters act in believable ways and their reasonings are explained, which is refreshing for this genre. The sentences are also more poetic than most of this genre. And the plot kept me guessing. Narration was pitch perfect too.

"What was the likelihood my adopted daughter would have my father's hazel eyes and my mother's mental illness?" In this fiercely candid memoir, Dr. Pruchno, a scientist widely acclaimed for her research on mental illness and families, shows how mental illness threatened to destroy her own family. Not once, but twice.

Gripping
Revisado: 10-08-23
I listened to this audiobook almost in on sitting. Quite a gripping memoir. I kept wondering what a mom with a daughter like Sophie could do. I think I wouldn’t have been so strict about room-cleaning and making sure she pays for things when she’s only 18. I felt like the author wanted so badly to control the situation that she tried to control Sophie through “privileges”, grounding, and ultimatums. Sophie is an artist, so she might have needed more autonomy, and at the same time, financial support and reassurance that she’s a valuable person even if she’s different. I hope doctors are no longer telling parents that their mentally ill children need to hit rock bottom. Though I hope that Sophie has hit that and is now getting the help she needs.

Historia
In April 2002, Janine Latus' youngest sister, Amy, wrote a note and taped it to the inside of her desk drawer. "Today Ron Ball and I are romantically involved", it read, "but I fear I have placed myself at risk in a variety of ways. Based on his criminal past, writing this out just seems like the smart thing to do. If I am missing or dead this obviously has not protected me...."

Amy’s Courage
Revisado: 09-06-23
This book’s title refers to a note in the author’s sister’s desk, cogently anticipating her murder, but hoping it wouldn’t be that. Amy’s murder is looming in the background, but the memoir is about her sister making similar mistakes in the men she chooses, but ultimately escapes. I highly recommend this book, especially those who are interested in learning more about the patterns and dangers of domestic control and violence.

I heard Bill Mitchell on the podcast This Is Actually Happening, which led me to listen to his podcast, and then this book. This book is a must-read, both for education but also as a work of art. Kristin was a gifted writer and so is her dad.

Historia
In this Audible Exclusive production, Academy Award® nominee Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) narrates one of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Sense and Sensibility. In this timeless tale of misguided romance and heartbreak, two teenage heroines must overcome the pitfalls of Georgian England’s high society in order to achieve the love and happiness they seek. The admiration that Pike has for Austen’s work is shown clearly through this passionate delivery of Austen’s first published novel.

Historia
In September of 1990, in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, sixteen-year-old Lisa Pruett was on her way to a midnight tryst with her boyfriend when she was viciously stabbed to death only thirty feet from the boy's home. The murder cast a palpable gloom over the upscale community and sparked accusations, theories, and rumors among Lisa's friends and peers. With a fresh perspective and painstaking research, James Renner reconstructs the events leading up to and following that heartbreaking night. What emerges is a portrait of a community seething with dark undercurrents.

Historia
Katrina Kim may be broke, the black sheep of her family, and slightly unhinged, but she isn’t a stalker. Her obsession with her co-worker, Kurt, is just one of many coping mechanisms—like her constant shape and number rituals, or the way scenes from her favorite children’s book bleed into her vision whenever she feels anxious. But when Katrina finds a cryptic message from Kurt implying he’s aware of her surveillance, her tenuous hold on a normal life crumbles. Driven by compulsion, she makes a midnight visit to the Cayatoga Bridge—just in time to witness Kurt’s suicide.

Wanted to like, but boring
Revisado: 06-13-23
This book has an interesting premise, but the single plot is just too boring. 20 minutes of the main character looking for her keys, for example. I wouldn’t have been surprised by a long passage of the narrator picking her nose. The detective stories I like have red herrings and interesting subplots. This just focused so much on the main plot that is was boring.
