The dedication of the female helicopter pilots was extremely powerful. All of the complications because it was women, and the presumption that women did not have to fulfill their duty was a constant beacon in this book. The resulting issues with spouses, children, and the feelings of all people accepting the reversed rolls was fully addressed, and so important to the telling of this story.

A powerful novel, well worth listening to.

It is not about the invasion of Normandy in WWIi. Setting is based on a small village on the coast of England that was requisitioned for planning and practicing for D—Day. It is a mystery, a love story, a tangle of families, and possibilities that could have resulted from the characters being forced to move from their perfect coastal village so the military had a perfect place to practice and hone their plans to invade Normandy, and end WWII.
It required concentration to keep all the threads of this story straight, similar to untangling a large skein of yarn 🧶, to arrive at the end with a smooth, finished, satisfying sweater. (Story)! I’m glad I persevered.

An enchanting story of dreams, history, family, love, and a chef; the reality of life’s ordinary challenges, and the importance of family, both biological and extended. A great listen. 💛

I loved these women and their immersion into a role in aiding the Allies, the Jewish people persecuted, searching for truth and keeping people informed by printing these truths. Their paths were very different, and yet the common interest in fighting the Germans, led to successes, even though they did not meet until long after D-Day and the end of the war.
The characters, and supporting characters had firm beliefs, strong wills,, and determination. An excellent book, read by a very fine narrator.

Enjoyed becoming reacquainted with an eclectic group of knitters, that used knitting to cement their friendship, relax them, and help them solve a sad murder mystery.

Characters are well defined, and maintain their lives through many phases.
The difficulties of war and the persecution of the Jewish Community are clearly defined, and the historical events are clear. The faith of each person falters, but never completely fails.
Truth, sadness, perseverance, love are consistent. A haunting story, that ended well.

It seemed like an impossible story until you read the author’s note on the research, and documentation of the events involved. The girls were clearly defined by their blue stocking outlook as mostly wealthy, society, private school, college educated (graduating from late 1880’s- 1918) convinced to show their ability to provide care and help for the French citizens affected by the war with Germany. The story is a lesson in the horrors of war, the naïveté of young women, the power of wealth, the grit and determination of people who found themselves volunteering for a situation for which they were ill-prepared. The face-to-face reality of the relationships of these women from very diverse backgrounds whose main connection was they had all graduated from the same school, and had very little else in common; and successfully helped the survivors of war in France.
I could NOT set it aside, and was glad I read this book.

I found the story as compelling and interesting as all the Gamache books. Louise Penny keeps the story flowing and her characters true. The ending leaves me thinking there is more to come to the reality of domestic terrorism.
I was disappointed in the narration. This narrator did not provide the clear definition of the characters voices I had become used to with Bathurst and Cosham. When he said Isabel’s name, it was not even clear who he as talking about. I missed the depth of Armand’s voice, and the clear delineation of the other characters..
I did listen in two sittings😉

So many coincidences, to create a story; makes it a bit improbable. But well written and easy to follow all the twists and turns to have a story of life, love, and family ties. The connection of Mothers for their children is central to the thread of the story, and all the other relationships fill out a story of love, and disappointment, and real life.
A well done narration that brings the characters and situations to life and reality.
