Historia
"In the summer of 1991 I was a normal kid. I did normal things. I had friends and a mother who loved me. I was just like you. Until the day my life was stolen. For eighteen years I was a prisoner. I was an object for someone to use and abuse. For eighteen years I was not allowed to speak my own name. I became a mother and was forced to be a sister. For eighteen years I survived an impossible situation. On August 26, 2009, I took my name back. My name is Jaycee Lee Dugard. I dont think of myself as a victim. I survived...."

Inspiring tale of resilience
Revisado: 08-12-24
Jaycee and I are the same age—I remember hearing about her disappearance and resurfacing over the decades. It was so scary to witness from the outside as a young girl; learning about her fear, bravery, compassion, and hope is poignant. As a listener, I kept flashing back to what I was doing and thinking on the dates she mentions, living our lives in parallel on two totally different planets.
Hearing her story in her own voice (both written and literally) is moving. Bearing witness to her telling of her story flips the typical “true crime” narrative and gives the survivor back her power. I’m honored that Jaycee chose to share her story with us, and am happy to see her triumphant in the end.

Helpful narrative
Revisado: 08-06-24
This was a very helpful timeline—as a non techie, but only-slightly-less-than-average online, the entire Twitter fiasco was a mystery to me. I had given up all social media back in 2016, save for Twitter, which I used for educational purposes and professional connections outside of academia. Like a lot of others, I was bummed when I had to lose the last of my connections to the wide world of scientists outside of my discipline. I was (am) concerned about the fate of public discourse and the erosion of civic engagement, and am always seeking to understand how we got here.
I’ve followed Elon’s career most of my adult life, and had been excited when he launched Space X (though I had no delusions about his personal skills after he’d unironically asked an interviewer how many hours a week he was ‘supposed’ to spend with his family). I had, and still have, a pretty dim view of how he and the rest of corporate America treat humans as commodities, but this book did remind me that there is some humanity in him somewhere. None of us are the villain in our own stories…

Historia
Over the past decade, Americans watched in bafflement and rage as one institution after another - from Wall Street to Congress, the Catholic Church to corporate America, even Major League Baseball - imploded under the weight of corruption and incompetence. In the wake of the Fail Decade, Americans have historically low levels of trust in their institutions; the social contract between ordinary citizens and elites lies in tatters. How did we get here? Christopher Hayes offers a radically novel answer.

Read in short spurts
Revisado: 12-29-22
I was late to reading this as I’ve just run across it in 2022. Still worth a listen, if only to realize we’re not crazy. I did enjoy learning about the studies everyone cites often. Narration was great—I always enjoy hearing an author read their own words.
However, if you’re a citizen activist, or just informed (newly or otherwise) you’re probably going to want to listen to this one days when you’re feeling chill. Or plan to meditate between readings, because damn this read is frustrating/enraging.
Take a breath, name three things you’re grateful for, and resume the listen. It’s worth your time if you want to build or reinforce your foundational understanding of meritocracy and our current oligarchy.

What a great find!
Revisado: 12-24-22
I stumbled upon this book by accident when looking for a quick listen (my last 8 books have been over 40 hrs each), and I’m so glad that I did! A fun, well-paced, and creative sci-fi short story. Kind of like a snack or candy treat for your brain ;)
I’ve been looking for a new author to binge since I finished Charles Yu’s stuff, and Dennis Taylor is it.
