Historia
In September 1776, the vulnerable Continental army under an unsure George Washington evacuated New York after a devastating defeat by the British army. Three weeks later, near the Canadian border, one of his favorite generals, Benedict Arnold, miraculously succeeded in postponing the British naval advance down Lake Champlain that might have lost the war. As this book ends, four years later, Washington has vanquished his demons, and Arnold has fled to the enemy. America was forced at last to realize that the real threat to its liberties might not come from without but from within.

Supplemental, Not Definitive
Revisado: 11-07-20
Well written, sometimes with his heart and sometimes with his mind. Demonstrated a strong knowledge of the subject, but a weak one of various tangents. For example, he thought Fabius defeated Hannibal and grossly misrepresented Napoleon. Much appreciated and thorough evaluation of Benedict Arnold, however.

Interesting Topic

I tried to engage but frequently found my mind wandering. I get the idea that the audience was other scholars, not those just curious about history.

Historia
A major new biography of the Civil War general and American president, by the author of the New York Times bestseller A. Lincoln. The dramatic story of one of America's greatest and most misunderstood military leaders and presidents, this is a major new interpretation of Ulysses S. Grant. Based on seven years of research with primary documents, some of them never tapped before, this is destined to become the Grant biography of our times.

Great But Too Heroic?
Revisado: 07-25-19
Excellent and detailed, but smelled of hero worship. Clear reading voice but the style invoked sleep.

Historia
Ayn Rand is the author of two phenomenally best-selling ideological novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, which have sold over 12 million copies in the United States alone. Through them, she built a right-wing cult following in the late 1950s and became the guiding light of Libertarianism and of White House economic policy in the 1960s and '70s. Her defenses of radical individualism and of selfishness as a "capitalist virtue" have permanently altered the American cultural landscape.

I appreciated that the biographer didn't paint Rand as a hero, but I didn't want to see her as a villain either.

Historia
Hannibal is often considered the finest general the world has ever known. Setting out from Carthaginian-dominated Spain with a small army of select troops, he fought his way over the Pyrenees and crossed the Alps with elephants and a full baggage train. Descending into Italy, he destroyed the main Roman army at Lake Trasimeno and came close to conquering Rome itself.

Comprehensive Detail
Revisado: 11-23-16
Excellent content but perhaps a little biased in favor of Hannibal. Even so, the author went into great detail and provided enough reason to justify his opinions.
The narrator was clear most of the time, but sometimes spoke too softly near the end of his sentences. I frequently found myself messing with the volume.

Comprehensive
Revisado: 09-24-16
The author presents many phases of Roman history in depth. She has a tendency to back-track and tie them together, particularly to capture the context of what she's explaining at that time.
It's very clear that she's passionate about the topic and has put a great deal of thought into this book. Covering a total of about 1000 years in amazing detail, I'd recommend this to anyone who's interested in a detailed, and sometimes philosophical, perspective of ancient Rome.
