When Soviet magicians conjured an arcane wall to blockade occupied Berlin, the world was outraged but let it stand for the sake of peace. Now, after 10 years of fighting with spies instead of spells, the CIA has discovered the unthinkable.... The wall is failing. For an even more nervewracking Cold War, add magic
Revisado: 07-10-23
This was a great alternate history fantasy thriller. The story was well-paced, the dialogue and inner monologues were nuanced with emotional depth taking what could have been cliche and making it work. Enjoyed the unique take on recognizable story concepts that wasn't too predictable.
My only real complaint is the minimalist approach to describing most of the magical battles. Made them feel glossed over sometimes - and yet I still have to say it was nicely done glossing-over.
I would LOVE to watch this story as an anime.
And January is a great narrator, particularly appreciated how she conveyed Jim's mental state in the latter half.

Thoughtful, intense, action-packed, I loved it
Revisado: 01-01-22
Risen was a fittingly thoughtful, emotionally intense and action-packed climax to the Alex Verus series. It exceeded my expectations with the battle scenes and particularly with how several difficult threads were wrapped up. I also appreciated all the nuances of Alex's situation on every level that were brought out and addressed.
Gildart Jackson's narration was outstanding as always, lending the right gravitas and emotional depth with clarity and good pacing.
I hope with the continuing fall in minimum real production cost, the proliferation of talent, and the growth of the streaming model, that one day the Alex Verus series gets made into an animated series on the level of the Netflix hit, Arcane. It would be absolutely glorious.

Historia
In Liftoff, Eric Berger takes listeners inside the wild early days that made SpaceX. Focusing on the company’s first four launches of the Falcon 1 rocket, he charts the bumpy journey from scrappy underdog to aerospace pioneer, drawing upon exclusive interviews with dozens of former and current engineers, designers, mechanics and executives, including Elon Musk. The enigmatic Musk, who founded the company with the dream of one day settling Mars, is the fuel that propels the book, with his daring vision for the future of space.

This book proves rocket surgery is a thing
Revisado: 03-15-21
This was an amazing story, series of stories really, of almost unimaginable struggle and stunning triumph. A story of what competence and sheer tenacity can do. The sympathetic focus on the engineers who went all-in with Musk, juxtaposed with Elon's perspective in leading and channeling them, was very enjoyable. Learned details and context and nuance I haven't come across anywhere else. I hope there will be more where this book came from in due time.
